Understanding Bibi?s Urgency: Israel is Only Target of Iran?s Need for Islamic Apocalypse

Demand for War: Fascinating Details of the Twelver Messiah of Shia Muslims

Understanding Bibi?s Urgency: Israel is Only Target of Iran?s Need for Islamic Apocalypse

Why does Iran seem to only fixate upon war with Israel above any other goal? In fact, the need for an apocalyptic war against the Israeli state is the centerpiece of their religion and the key to unlocking paradise, in their estimation. The issue of the Shia?s messiah brings to light perhaps the most important aspect of the warmongering now occurring in the Middle East?that the bloodlust is religious in nature and not likely to go away on its own, ever. In fact, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad recently stated he?d like to see Israel gone. So how do we understand Shia Iran?s seeming eternal hatred for Israel?

Perhaps the best way to understand this is that the Iranian Shias see attacking Israel as a way to jump-start the final Muslim holy war and usher in the beautiful era of Islamic world preeminence?a time of peace and plenty. This final apocalypse is interpreted as Iran?s war against Israel, which must occur before paradise is established. This is why the Israelis fear a nuclear armed Iran.

I. Islamic Sects: Sunni & Shia

There are two main sects of classic Islam. The first is the approximately 90% majority Sunni. Shia, are the 10%-15% minority sect. Both believe in a Muslim Messiah who comes back to restore the righteous kingdom of Allah. One writer describes them:

The Muslim world is separated into two main groups of adherents, the Sunni and the Shiite (or Shia). The Sunnis are the dominant group with Shiites being found predominantly in Iraq and Iran. Of the Shia, the largest group is the Twelvers, or Imami Muslims.

The schism dates back to death of Mohammed in AD 632. The Shia believe that the head of the Islamic religion is passed through the bloodline of Mohammed or imams selected by Allah. The Shia believe that leadership of Islam passed to Mohammed?s cousin and son-in-law, Ali. The word ?Shia? is a shortened form of ?Shia-t-Ali,? which means ?the party of Ali.? Shia leaders are called ?imams.?

Sunnis, on the other hand, believe that the legitimate head of Islam is elected from among the qualified Islamic clerics. Sunnis chose Abu Bakr, a close friend and prot?g? of Mohammed, as the first Caliph of the greater Islamic nation. The word ?Sunni? means ?one who follows in the traditions of the prophet.? The Shia have always rejected these elected Sunni leaders.

II. Who Are the Twelvers?

The Twelvers are the largest sect in Shia Islam. In Shia, there were 12 holy Imams, the last one hidden by Allah until the time came for his righteous judgment. Therefore, this group is known as the Twelvers and they await the return of the Mahdi messiah who comes back to lead his people to victory over all foes. After this the Mahdi creates a worldwide just Muslim state. This final apocalypse is interpreted by Iran as war against Israel, which must occur before paradise is established. This is why the Israelis fear a nuclear armed Iran. Says Sacred Texts:

The Twelver Sh??a, or Ithna-?ashar?ya, are numerically the largest of the Sh??? sects, and exhibit most of the doctrines which became classical with the Sh??a. Theologically, they believe that since God is essentially good, He cannot do evil. He has created man with free will in order to know Him, and desires man?s welfare. It follows that He would not leave man without guidance; thus the books of the prophets have been sent down. Even so, as the sects of Islam attest, confusion arises, so it follows that God has given man in addition to the Prophet an infallible guide in religious matters. This guide is the Im?m. It is also clear then that the selection of the Im?ms is a matter which could not be left to human error; they were Divinely appointed from birth. The true Im?ms are the direct line of ?Al?.

III. Muslim Messiah: Shia Mahdi Imamate

There are messiah figures found in all the Bible-derived religions. Both Jews and Christians expect the Messiah to come, although Christians believe he has already appeared in the form of Jesus. Now they await the Second Coming. In Islam is also found a messiah, called the al-Mahdi, according to to Abdulaziz Abdulhussein Sachedina in Islamic Messianism: The Idea of the Mahdi in Twelver Shi?ism. This figure owes much to Jewish and Christian doctrines, despite overall differences. Further, Sunni and Shia disagree as to what his nature will be, as well. According to Sachedina, the Muslim messiah is he who will ?appear? (zuhur) or ?rise? (qiyam) against the intolerable secularists and their depraved system.

Sachadina says the Muslim messiah differs from the Christian type in that he does not offer personal salvation since mankind is not dead in its sins. Neither does he offer national salvation into a separate, autonomous godly kingdom. Instead, the Mahdi is responsible for the creation of the umma, ?a worldwide membership of all those who believe in God and his revelation through Muhammad.?

One can trace the development of Shia Islam itself into the seeking of the godly Imam who comes back in the spirit of Muhammad, from a descendant of his lineage (ahl al-bayt). The Sunnis resisted any continuation of the line of Mohammad, considering this idolatry. Curiously, the development of the idea of Islamic salvation comes after the political establishment of the idea of the Muslim state, according to Sachedina, who writes:

Quranic teaching about salvation had to wait on historical events, and this fact undoubtedly had a major impact on their formulation. If the Islamic doctrine of salvation was conceived in the formation of an ideal religio-political community living under a fitting legal and social system of Islam on earth, then such an ideal was dependent on the leadership which could assure its realizationMost of these early discussions on the Imamate took at first sight political form, but eventually the debate encompassed the religious implications of salvation. This is true of all Islamic concepts, since Islam as a religious phenomenon was subsequent to Islam as a political reality.

The Sunnites looked upon salvation as possible only through the allegiance and loyalty of all believers in the community. As long as the community continued to be fully committed to the promulgation and observance of the Law (Shari?a), its salvation was guaranteed regardless of the qualities of the leader

The Shia rejected this, insisting that without a worthy messianic leader salvation was not certain, but acknowledging the rightness of the chosen Imam guarantees salvation. The general belief of Islam on its messiah was summed up by Ibn Khaldun:

It has been well known (and generally accepted) by all Muslims in every epoch, that at the end of time a man from the family (of the Prophet) will without fail make his appearance, one who will strengthen the religion and make justice triumph. The Muslims will follow him, and he will gain domination over the Muslim realm. He will be called the Mahdi. Following him, the Antichrist will appear, together with all the subsequent signs of the Hour (the Day of Judgment), as established in (the sound tradition of) the Sahih. After (the Mahdi), Isa (Jesus) will descend and kill the Antichrist. Or, Jesus will descend together with the Mahdi, and help him kill (the Antichrist), and have him as the leader in his prayers.

The Mahdi is not just a suffering, gentle leader who comes to exhort his followers towards good. Instead, he returns to take up arms and bring in the umma through force. It?s helpful that the Imam is also a sinless person, or is infallible (?isma), who also had the Light of God, passed down from the Prophets. The Prophetic weapons (al-silah) are also at his disposal, being those left behind by the Prophet?his sword, efficacious coat of mail, and short spear (anaza). Included in this bequest are many scrolls of knowledge, as well. In the chosen Imam dwells bodily the full ability to interpret all religious questions, and all knowledge.

IV. The Occultation (Ghayba)?Hidden Muslim Messiah

The term occultation in general means to obscure. In Shia the term concerns the doctrine of the hidden Imam, whom Allah sent into hiding until the time of the apocalypse. One site describes the doctrine:

For our master, mahdi - the expected one, there has been two occultations: the minor occultation and the major occultation. The minor occultation started from the time of mahdi?s birth and continued till the end of the special deputyship which lasted for seventy-four years. The major occultation commenced after the minor occultation and will continue as long as God wills mahdi to emerge and revolt with his might.

Writes David Thornton,

There were a total of twelve imams beginning with Imam Ali. The last imam was Mahmoud al-Mahdi who lived in Samarra, Iraq and was last seen in AD 874. Twelvers believe that al-Mahdi disappeared into ?occultation,? hiding in the spirit world, and is still alive. The Mahdi, as the twelfth imam is known, supposedly communicated from the spirit world through intermediaries called Babs, or ?gates.? The last Bab died in AD 941, marking the end of the lesser occultation and the beginning of the greater occultation. In the greater occultation, the Mahdi can no longer communicate with earth until he returns to earth shortly before the Final Judgment and the end of the world.

Twelver theology indicates that the twelfth imam will one day return when the world is in a time of great chaos and upheaval. The Mahdi will return to usher in a period of peace and justice under a worldwide Islamic caliphate. They also believe that Jesus Christ will return to rule alongside the Mahdi as his aide.

V. Apocalypse Before Paradise

The return of the righteous Mahdi is an expression of chiliastic belief, according to Sachadina. This is a biblically derived idea, where a religious leader comes to destroy evil and usher in a period of righteousness and orthodoxy. Fascinatingly, the Shia teach that the righteous Mahdi will team up with Jesus Christ for the Second Coming. Sachedina writes,

The Imamite doctrine of the Mahdi at one point merges with the return of Jesus, another prominent figure of Islamic eschatology. The doctrine of the return of Jesus, as described in the Sunnite sources and cited by the Shi?ite traditionists is explained in a more or less uniform manner.

He will descend in the Holy Land at a place called Afiq with a spear in his hand; he will kill with it al-Dajjal (the Antichrist of Islamic eschatology) and go to Jerusalem at the time of the morning prayer. The Imam will seek to yield his place to him, but Jesus will refuse and will worship behind him according to the Sharia of Muhammad. Thereafter he will kill the swine, break the cross, and kill all the Christians who do not believe in him.

The Antichrist is also portrayed in memorable imagery. Sachadina describes him,

He is one-eyed, his eye being in his forehead and shining like the morning star. On his forehead is written, ?This is the kafir (non-believer),? which will be legible to both literate and illiterate persons. His emergence will be preceded by a time of great hardship.

VI. Iran Versus Israel: Countdown to Armageddon?

Armageddon, or the Battle of Israel?s Megiddo Plain, is the final war before the Last Judgment and pits the forces of God against those of Anti-Christ (Revelation 16:16). Could Iran be bringing something resembling this onto the Middle East? Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is a Shia who recently called for a New World Order at the United Nations. He stated, in part:

The current abysmal situation of the world and the bitter incidents of history are due mainly to the wrong management of the world and the self-proclaimed centers of power who have entrusted themselves to the devil. Continued threat by the uncivilized Zionists to resort to military action against our great nation is a clear example of this bitter reality Are we to believe that those who spend hundreds of millions of dollars on election campaigns have the interest of the people of the world at their hearts? There is no doubt that the world is in need of a new order and a fresh way of thinking.

In fact, instead of asking for what is typically called the NWO, he is hearkening back to classic Mahdi doctrine. Further, he implies to his followers that his upcoming nuclear missile will help bring in the period of paradise after Israel is destroyed. Here, Ahmadinejad stated classic Shia Mahdi doctrine:

-God Almighty has promised us a man of kindness, a man who loves people and loves absolute justice, a man who is a perfect human being and is named Imam A1-Mahdi, a man who will come in the company of Jesus Christ (PBUH) and the righteous. By using the inherent potential of all the worthy men and women of all nations and I repeat, the inherent potential of ?all the worthy men and women of all nations? he will lead humanity into achieving its glorious and eternal ideals.

-The arrival of the Ultimate Savior will mark a new beginning, a rebirth and a resurrection. It will be the beginning of peace, lasting security and genuine life.

-His arrival will be the end of oppression, immorality, poverty, discrimination and the beginning of justice, love and empathy.

-He will come and he will cut through ignorance, superstition, prejudice by opening the gates of science and knowledge. He will establish a world brimful of prudence and he will prepare the ground for the collective, active and constructive participation of all in the global management.

Conclusion

Is America doing everything we can to stop World War III? In fact, it seems the current administration cannot even admit how Iran?s theology plays into their foreign policy. Yet, as we see from the above UN speech, the apocalypse and the Muslim messianic Mahdi is constantly in Iran?s thinking. So, if we don?t stop their building a nuclear weapon, we may have no choice but to watch the last war of mankind take place. So, what are we going to do?

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg diversifying by adding on Search Engine capabilities reports MahakalInfoTech.com

(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 30, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- As opposed to his success in 2004, Mark Zuckerberg?s business model in 2012 is not going so well by Wall Street?s standards. As the CEO and founder of Facebook, Zuckerberg has a lot to worry about, particularly as the company is lagging in its current attempts to diversify, especially by adding a search engine on the site.

In an interview with Tech Crunch Disrupt SF Conference, Zuckerberg announced that Facebook is beginning a process to optimize their search engine. CBS News Online calls it ?friend mining,? a process that feeds off Facebook?s goldmine of personal information.

Zuckerberg explained that the search engine would rely on a person?s friends? ?likes? to recommend findings.

While the site is not known for its search capabilities, those who work there are quick to point out that they receive over 800 million queries daily, mostly of people looking for their friends.

Ultimately, Zuckerberg does not want users to ever log off of Facebook. While the Bing search bar is small and hidden on Facebook?s page and already keeps the ?likes? of a person?s friends in a search result as part of Facebook?s partnership with Bing, Zuckerberg wants success more akin to Google?s success.

Google is a far shoot with 2.87 billion searches a day; Zuckerberg?s ambitions remain to be seen as realistic or far-fetched.

Cops: Teen mom left 3-week-old baby along road

By NBC News staff and wires services

A 19-year-old mother has been charged with dumping her 3-week-old daughter along a rural road for 12 hours and lying to police about the baby's whereabouts, prompting an Amber Alert.

Bond was set at $100,000 Friday for Kendra Meaker of Toulon, who was charged in Stark County Court with obstruction of justice and endangering the life or health of a child.

Meaker told a judge during a Friday court appearance that she had no job and no income, and said nothing else.

More from NBCChicago.com:?14-year-old charged in fatal shooting of 17-year-old

During the hearing, Sheriff Jimmie Dison told the court Kendra that showed up at his department Thursday morning to report that someone had snatched her 3-week-old baby, Mia Graci Thompson, out of the back seat of her car after she went inside the post office in Toulon, about 30 miles northwest of Peoria, to mail a package.

Illinois State Police issued an Amber Alert on Thursday morning.

Meaker, who also has an 11-month-old daughter, eventually changed her story and told Illinois State Police and FBI investigators she left the baby on a roadside, Sheriff Jimmie Dison said. The baby was on the gravel roadside from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday as scores of police and volunteers searched for her.

Two volunteer searchers, Russell and Mary Jo Van Dran, said they heard a baby crying as they sat inside their truck and found the child in a culvert just off a gravel road outside Toulon.

"My wife was out of the truck like a shot, cut down there and we had a heck of a time getting the baby out of the grass. She had her fingers interwoven in the grass," Russell Van Dran told NBC station WEEK of Peoria, Ill. "We were just at the right place at the right time. God had a hand in this thing too."

Meaker's aunt, Sandy Hollingsworth of Marseilles, is acting as spokeswoman for Meaker's family.

"This has been a hellish 24 hours that our family has endured," Hollingsworth said.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services said the baby was being cared for at a hospital. Meaker's 11-month-old daughter was with relatives.

A telephone listing for Meaker was disconnected. Meaker is next due in court Oct. 12.

Under Illinois' Safe Haven law, parents are allowed to relinquish custody of an unharmed newborn up to 30 days old to personnel at a hospital, emergency medical care facility, police or fire station.

Parents can give up their child anonymously and without the threat of prosecution for abandonment.

Uranium-contaminated site yields wealth of information on microbes 10 feet under

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? University of California, Berkeley, scientists have sequenced nearly all the genes in an underground community of microbes at a contaminated uranium mill site in Rifle, Colo., providing information that could help scientists better manipulate the microbes that remediate heavy metal contamination or those that take up and store carbon from the atmosphere.

Each of the 150,000 genes from the sample was assigned to one of 80 different microbes in the soil, an unprecedented computational feat made possible by new genomic tools developed at UC Berkeley.

The findings could help improve clean-up at hundreds of sites around the United States where microbes are nurtured to convert toxic metals, including arsenic and mercury, into chemical forms that will not leech into aquifers and streams, the scientists said. It may be possible, for example, to add nutrients that would create the ideal mix of microbes to immobilize the metals, instead of just feeding all the microbes already present.

"In order to make this goal a reality, it is critical not to just detect the relevant genes in subsurface microorganisms, but to know enough about the lifestyles of the organisms with genes of interest so that manipulation of the system enriches specifically for that organism," said study leader Jill Banfield, UC Berkeley professor of earth and planetary science and of environmental science, policy and management.

The information in the genomes of the 80 microbes located 10 feet or more beneath the surface could also lead to improved methods for stimulating the uptake of carbon from the atmosphere by soil bacteria to reduce greenhouse gases.

"Our study turned upside down what we thought was happening at the bioremediation site," said lead author Kelly C. Wrighton, a UC Berkeley post-doctoral fellow who specializes in the physiology of microbes. "What these genomes have given us is amazing in terms of being able to look under the hood at the machine of these organisms that we never really knew anything about, except that we saw them in certain types of environments."

Wrighton, Banfield and colleagues at UC Berkeley, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), report their metagenomic analysis in the Sept. 28 issue of the journal Science. Banfield is also a member of the Earth Sciences Division at LBNL.

The metagenomic analysis proves that methods developed by Banfield at UC Berkeley to take a jumble of sequenced genes and assign them to specific microbes works even when there are nearly 100 bacteria and Archaea in the sample. Most metagenome analyses generally leave the genes unassigned to organisms, which gives scientists little idea of the role specific microbes play.

"The techniques developed in Jill's lab for doing metagenomics of very complex microbial communities is giving us a much more accurate look at what the microbes are doing and how we can modify them to get them to do more effectively what we want them to do, which is reduce uranium to form a solid," said Philip E. Long, an LBNL geologist who manages research at the Rifle study site. "We are finding out from these studies that the subsurface microbial economy is different from what we thought."

The "dark matter" of biology

The microbes came from groundwater samples taken at a site once used to process vanadium and, during and after World War II, uranium. The site borders the Colorado River, which means that rain can carry dissolved metals into the groundwater and eventually into the river. Some microbes "breathe" the metals like we breathe oxygen, chemically altering them so they become insoluble and remain in the sediment, Wrighton said.

Banfield refers to microbe communities like these as the "dark matter" of biology, an analogy to the missing mass in the universe that has stumped astronomers for decades. The bacterial tree of life can be divided into about 60 phylum-level branches, but essentially nothing is known about half of them, she said.

"This new study provides new knowledge about the ecology as well as the evolution of a significant chunk of what could be considered the dark matter of the microbial world," she said.

Before now, Banfield had performed metagenomic analyses of eight microbes coexisting in highly acidic underground streams in a former California mine and current Superfund clean-up site. Such an analysis involves grinding up all organisms in a sample, sequencing all the genes and then matching each with a unique microbial species.

The new study involved the genomes of 10 times more organisms. All are anaerobic -- they don't breathe oxygen like most organisms on Earth -- and most, while not new to science, are totally unstudied because they cannot be cultured in the laboratory. Many are only a few hundred nanometers across, making them among the smallest known microbes.

Scientists at the Rifle site spread acetate -- essentially dilute vinegar -- in the subsurface to feed the underground bacteria that convert soluble metals to insoluble metals. They had assumed that they were culturing a colony comprised mostly of Geobacter bemidjiensis, a well-known metal-reducing bacterium.

Instead, Wrighton said, analysis of three samples obtained within 10 days of acetate application showed a healthy population of Geobacter, but a throng of other bacteria presumably feeding on dead Geobacter and other carbon in the soil from previous additions of acetate. These organisms use or ferment complex carbon, such as dead plants and dead microbes, and produce hydrogen, small organic carbon compounds and carbon dioxide.

"The fermenters producing hydrogen after multiple additions of acetate may be more important to the underlying microbial community than we once thought," Long said.

"What we found was like a microbial zoo," Wrighton said. "We thought that the respiring organisms -- those breathing metals and making carbon dioxide -- were our heavy lifters, but we found that fermentative organisms probably underpin their metabolism. These organisms produce as a bi-product acetate, lactate and ethanol as well as hydrogen and those are all components that these respiring organisms can use."

Wrighton, Banfield and their team are continuing metagenomic analyses of samples from the Rifle site, including some obtained before nutrients are added to determine what the natural population looks like. This will provide a comprehensive view of the metabolic potential of the subsurface that ultimately can be harnessed for bioremediation, Banfield said.

"Our research has lifted a veil on a large portion of bacterial life and enabled us to probe in great depth and detail these unknown and uncultured bacteria," said Wrighton, who hopes to use this information to raise the microbes in the laboratory. "We now have information, which is encoded in their genomic DNA, pertaining to what they look like, how they make their living in the environment, and the interactions they have with other organisms."

The work was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Biological and Environmental Research program. Coauthors of the paper include Brian C. Thomas, Itai Sharon and Christopher S. Miller of UC Berkeley; Long, Cindy J. Castelle and Kenneth H. Williams of LBNL; Nathan C. VerBerkmoes and Robert L. Hettich of ORNL; and Michael J. Wilkins and Mary S. Lipton of PNNL.

Do Online Petitions Lead to Identity Theft? - Finances - Law and ...

Both online petitions and incidences of identity theft have gone up in the last few years. Could the two be connected?

It's no secret that online petitions require personal information. Most states require a petition signature to include the signer's legal name and address to verify the validity of the signature.

Websites like Change.org are popular for signing online petitions on a variety of topics but many of them are not secure and information sent online is not encrypted. Information that's not encrypted is easier for hackers to access and that can be bad news.

Don't reject the petitions entirely but before you sign make sure you're protecting your identity as much as you can.

Change.org is the most popular site for social-change related petitions and they make an effort to protect users.

Petition makers are not allowed to solicit personal financial information such as social security numbers. Signers are not allowed to post a third-party's persona information. But just because the policy forbids it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Many similar sites rely in part on user policing to know when something is wrong.

That means you can make an impact. If a petition doesn't look right, report it.

Change.org also clearly states that it's not responsible for user conduct either online or offline. The terms of service also significantly limit the company's liability so if something does happen it might be hard to make a case.

The first step in protecting your identity is keeping identifying information to yourself. Name and address can be ok but a petition should never ask for your social security number, bank or financial information, or credit card numbers.

If you are a victim of identity theft, there are things you can do to recover. Talk to a trusted attorney to figure out how to sort out the situation and fight back.

Petitions are a useful vehicle for social change and online petitions make a more global impact possible but it's important to also consider the risks. Keep your financial information private to prevent identity theft and then you won't have to worry about supporting positive ideas.

Top 5 Techniques of Traffic Creation Exposed. | Search Engine ...

Traffic building naturally is the essence of any Web marketing campaign. Without traffic creation, irrespective of what the signup rate on your sales pages or the sign up rate on your selling page or your capture page, you simply do not have a firm without traffic. I don't believe you can simply depend on one strategy of traffic creation irrespective of how good that system of traffic building is.

One of the worst things to occur is when you rely on one source of traffic, and that source of traffic falls apart.

Article promoting is my number one methodology of traffic creation. This specific tool can help an individual effectively create content for their web site and internet pages that may attain their target audience. This specific tool links a domain to a favored networking site thru a collection of back links. Employing an internet site traffic generator can be of significant benefit to an internet site business. E-zine advertising is my number 3 methodology of traffic creation.

Late-Career Scientist, Mid-Career Scientist, Early-Career Scientist, College and University Faculty, Postdoctoral Scholars, Graduate Student, Undergraduate Audience Interest Statement: There is very little funding available for initial startups unless you can tap your own bank accounts or have wealthy friends and relatives. You will probably have to do this to get your new business ?off the ground?.? You can always start your business on a part time basis, particularly if the new business has no conflict with your regular job. Once a company is shipping products and, if profitable, the funding options increase. There are a number of Local Banks that will provide receivables financing while other companies? can provide factoring of receivables to improve cash flow.? A number of states have initiatives to help small businesses. For example, in MA, we have the MA Office of Business Development that is chartered to help small businesses and has offices across the State. Other states such as CT, RI, OH, NY,PA, to name a few, have Small? Business Development Centers also.? We? have quasi government organizations in MA such as MTDC, MCRC, MIFA that provide some venture capital for startups, loans for phase 2 SBIR?s, mezzanine financing, loans for real estate and/or capital equipment. Of course, there is always the SBA funding through local banks that can be used for capital equipment, property and receivables financing. The thing to keep in mind is that the loan programs are just that- ?Loans?. They have to be paid back and generally require personal guarantees. It is not easy to start a successful business but there are many places to go now for help including the American Chemical Society Career Consultant Program (CCP) that offers personalized consulting on r?sum? preparation, job search strategies, interviewing techniques, making a career transition, salary negotiation techniques and 30-minute resume review sessions to critique a candidate's? including a mock interview session followed by a feedback conversation. Language use is simpler than previously thought, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? For more than 50 years, language scientists have assumed that sentence structure is fundamentally hierarchical, made up of small parts in turn made of smaller parts, like Russian nesting dolls.

A new Cornell study suggests language use is simpler than they had thought.

Co-author Morten Christiansen, Cornell professor of psychology and co-director of the Cornell Cognitive Science Program, and his colleagues say that language is actually based on simpler sequential structures, like clusters of beads on a string.

"What we're suggesting is that the language system deals with words by grouping them into little clumps that are then associated with meaning," he said.

Sentences are made up of such word clumps, or "constructions," that are understood when arranged in a particular order. For example, the word sequence "bread and butter" might be represented as a construction, whereas the reverse sequence of words ("butter and bread") would likely not.

The sequence concept has simplicity on its side; language is naturally sequential, given the temporal cues that help us understand and be understood as we use language. Moreover, the hierarchy concept doesn't take into account the many other cues that help convey meaning, such as the setting and knowing what was said before and the speaker's intention.

The researchers drew on evidence in language-related fields from psycholinguistics to cognitive neuroscience. For example, research in evolutionary biology indicates that humans acquired language (and animals did not) because we have evolved abilities in a number of areas, such as being able to correctly guess others' intentions and learn a large number of sounds that we then relate to meaning to create words. In contrast, the hierarchy concept suggests humans have language thanks only to highly specialized "hardware" in the brain, which neuroscientists have yet to find.

Research in cognitive neuroscience shows that the same set of brain regions seem to be involved in both sequential learning and language, suggesting that language is processed sequentially. And several recent psycholinguistic studies have shown that how well adults and children perform on a sequence learning task strongly predicts how well they can process the deluge of words that come at us in rapid succession when we're listening to someone speak. "The better you are at dealing with sequences, the easier it is for you to comprehend language," Christiansen said.

The study by Christiansen and his colleagues has important implications for several language-related fields. From an evolutionary perspective, it could help close what has been seen as a large gap between the communications systems of humans and other nonhuman primates. "This research allows us a better understanding of our place in nature, in that we can tie our language ability, our communication abilities, more closely to what we can see in other species. It could have a big impact in terms of allowing us to think in more humble terms about the origin of language in humans," Christiansen said.

The research could also affect natural language processing, the area of computer science that deals with human language, by encouraging scholars to focus on sequential structure when trying to create humanlike speech and other types of language processing, Christiansen said. He pointed out that machines already successfully perform such tasks as translation and speech recognition thanks to algorithms based on sequential structures.

The study, "How hierarchical is language use?" was published Sept. 12 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. The research was funded by the European Union, the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research and the Binational Science Foundation.

'Parade of crusaders' joins fight against brain cancer

Hundreds of people gathered outside the Seattle Center Saturday morning to take part in the Seattle Brain Cancer Walk. The annual event not only raises money for research but also helps bring patients and families together for one cause - a cure.

Carrying big signs and wearing colorful shirts declaring the name of a loved one at the cancer walk is like a parade of crusaders - each one battling to help find a cure while showing support for others dealing with the difficult disease.

"Nov. 4 was the day we first got the news that dad had a brain tumor," said Maria Barrett.

Barrett was just one of 30 family members and friends walking as a part of the "Warriors 4 Dad" team in support of her dad, Ed Elston. In honor of Elston?s Alma mater ? Oregon State - the team decided to sport orange and black for the event. And despite his family?s best efforts to make things easier for Elston during the walk, Barrett says her dad was determined to take as many steps as he could on his own.

"We got the wheelchair just for this weekend, and he wasn't too excited about that idea," she said. "We're so proud of him. We're so, so proud of him. This has been something none of us will ever forget."

For those walking in honor of someone no longer here, many said it was that person's strength which continued to move them, including a group of 40 walking for KOMO 4 News Anchor Kathi Goertzen.

"In the springtime, Mom actually rounded us up and said - 'Hey guys, I really want to do the Brain Cancer Walk' - and we said - 'Mom, you don't have brain cancer, you have a benign tumor'," said Alexa Jarvis, Kathi's daughter.

But that didn?t matter; Alexa says her mom wanted to come to the walk anyway, simply to show support.

"It's great to have someone come up and tell me that Kathi helped them get through," said Rick Jewett, Kathi's husband.

Kathi's family says supporting others, without always knowing she was doing it, was and is the spirit of Kathi.

"It's overwhelming for me," said Elston.

Fighting brain cancer - something with no known cure - takes research and hope, and Elston says he plans to be a part of both.

Currently, there are more than 120 different types of brain tumors. All of the money raised from the walk goes toward patient care, advocacy and research happening in the Pacific Northwest.
