Inflation slows in China

Prices in China were up 1.9% in September compared to the previous year.

HONG KONG (CNNMoney) -- Chinese consumers paid 1.9% more for goods in September than they did a year ago, the government's National Bureau of Statistics reported Monday. That's down from a 2% increase in August.

Food prices, which account for more than a third of the inflation calculation, rose 2.5% during the month.

Household finances in China are especially susceptible to fluctuations in food prices, as many poor families spend large percentages of their income on food.

Still, inflation remains at very low levels. As recently as one year ago, China's consumer price index stood above 6% -- well north of the government's stated inflation rate target of 4%.

In July, officials said that annual economic growth dropped to 7.6% in the second quarter -- down from 8.1% the previous quarter. The government will issue its third quarter GDP report later this week, and economists expect growth to remain well below 8%.

Some analysts have recently lowered their growth forecasts for the rest of the year, while some noted that weakness is likely to extend into 2013.

The People's Bank of China twice lowered interest rates this year in an effort to spur growth, and the central bank has also cut the amount of money banks are required to hold in reserves.

The government confirmed more action last month, finalizing the details on a $157.7 billion investment in 55 new infrastructure products.

China's once-in-a-decade leadership transition is scheduled to start Nov. 8. The timing of the event, which will reshape the ranks of China's Communist Party, could put any policy changes on hold.

Economists at UBS said Monday that further action is unlikely after a round of positive trade data that has eased concerns.

"We do not expect the government to come up with any major new stimulus, either during the leadership transition or after, unless the economy takes a turn for the much worse," the bank said in a research note. To top of page

HBT: Ump admits bad call; Girardi calls for replay

Umpire Jeff Nelson admitted after Sunday?s game that he botched the call at second base that aided the Tigers in a two-run eighth inning against the Yankees.

Omar Infante was attempting to return to the bag after rounding second on a single, but he was clearly tagged out by Robinson Cano on the play. Nelson called him safe.

?The hand did not get in before the tag, the call was incorrect,? he said.??I had the tag late and the hand going into the bag before the tag on the chest.?

It should have been the third out of the inning, but the Tigers went on to score two runs afterwards.

?Yeah, he was out by I would say five feet,? Cano said. ?It is tough, because if it was the right call, it would be 1-0 instead of 3-0.?

Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who was ejected after arguing the call during a pitching change, dedicated a significant portion of his postgame press conference to stumping for replay.

?It?s frustrating,? he said. ?I don?t have a problem with Jeff?s effort, I don?t, because he hustled to get to the play. But in this day and age when we have instant replay available to us, it?s got to change. These guys are under tremendous amounts of pressure.

?It is a tough call for him, because the tag is underneath and it?s hard for him to see. And it takes more time to argue and get upset than you get the call right. Too much is at stake. We play 235 days to get to this point, and two calls go against us. We lose it by one run last night.?

Girardi was referring to another poor call on a ball that Robinson Cano beat out in the Game 1 loss. Whether it would have made a difference or not, it definitely stings with the Yankees down two games to none as they head to Detroit for Tuesday?s Game 3.

Bill Clinton's back in the campaign game big time

The Obama campaign said Saturday it was pairing Clinton with another heavyweight, rocker Bruce Springsteen, at a rally this coming Thursday in Ohio, one of the most pivotal states.

Bill Clinton is back in the game big time, serving as President Barack Obama's surrogate in chief and relying on his oratorical skill and folksy style to help Democratic candidates.

His high-profile role also gives him the chance to enhance his legacy as Democratic elder statesman and global humanitarian. He can build up political IOUs should his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, decide to run again for president down the road.

Out of office since 2001, Clinton is proving that he retains a strong appeal with voters, especially in conservative states where Democratic candidates aren't eager to appear with Obama. The ex-president is a leading expert in the art of the political comeback ? a skill the struggling Obama could use now.

Also, there's this uncomfortable truth: Obama needs Clinton to generate support with white, working-class and independent voters who were drawn to Clinton and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, but who haven't warmed to Obama.

Bill Clinton: 5 reasons he is helping Obama

"If there's one thing we've learned in this election season, by the way, it is that a few words from Bill Clinton can do a man a lot of good," Romney joked in remarks at the Clinton Global Initiative last month, a nod to Clinton's convention speech.

The Obama campaign said Saturday it was pairing Clinton with another heavyweight, rocker Bruce Springsteen, at a rally this coming Thursday in Ohio, one of the most pivotal states.

In Indianapolis on Friday to boost Senate Democratic hopeful Joe Donnelly, Clinton said he hadn't expected to be so involved in the 2012 campaign. But Hillary Clinton is busy as America's chief diplomat and daughter Chelsea works for a broadcast network, he noted.

"So you're stuck with me," Clinton told the crowd.

Obama and other Democrats ? maybe even Clinton himself, bitter at the way Al Gore campaigned largely without him in 2000 ? wouldn't have it any other way.

Obama himself has cracked that he should appoint Clinton "secretary of explaining stuff."

The lighthearted tone and determined cooperation between Obama and Clinton is hard-won and may not end with the 2012 campaign.

The bruising 2008 Democratic primary between Obama and Hillary Clinton damaged relations between the families. Obama's appointment of Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, and her successes in the job, healed the relationship enough for Clinton to step in to help with Obama's re-election.

If Obama has Bill Clinton to thank for a second term, one way to pay back the debt could be Obama's support for a Hillary Clinton campaign of the future.

Among voters generally, Bill Clinton is more appealing than Obama. A CBS News/New York Times poll in September found 66 percent of registered voters with a favorable view of Clinton, compared with 45 percent for Obama.

"He's got a way of communicating complex ideas in plain ways that no one else has," said Greg Haas, who ran Clinton's 1992 campaign in Ohio and who is Democratic chairman in Franklin County, which includes Columbus. "No one in my lifetime. He's in a class by himself."

Clinton symbolizes good economic times for many voters, including a federal budget that was balanced under his leadership. His convention speech rebutted Romney's attacks on Obama and accused Romney of pushing an economic plan that is doomed to fail. Clinton lends Obama credibility on the issue that voters consistently name as their top concern: the economy.

Mental Health and Pets | The Lost Dogs' Home

Have you ever gone through a rough patch in your life or just had an off day and realised on reflection how much of a positive role your pet played in helping you feel better?

A range of research shows that contact with animals can improve our wellbeing and state of mental health. A publication put together by Beyond Blue and Deakin University in 2010 found that caring for and having contact with pets encouraged owners to spend more time outdoors and socialise, added meaning to their lives and generally enriched and enhanced their sense of wellbeing.

On this week?s program we explore the strong connection pet owners have with their furry friends and look at ways to return the favour and maintain happy and healthy pets.

VP debate tees up closing issues for Romney, Obama

DANVILLE, Ky. (AP) ? In a spirited debate that laid out stark choices, Joe Biden and Paul Ryan teed up pointed arguments on the economy, social policy and America's place in the world that President Barack Obama and GOP rival Mitt Romney now will drive forward into the campaign's final stretch.

With just 25 days to go in Campaign 2012 and throngs of people already voting, Obama and Romney will try to answer two questions that their running mates posed to the tens of millions of Americans who watched Thursday's hard-fought, 90-minute debate.

"Who do you trust?" Biden asked.

"Wouldn't it be nice to have a job-creator in the White House?" asked Ryan.

Biden, eager to make up for the president's lackluster performance in his first debate with Romney, played the aggressor throughout. And the president gave his running mate a quick thumbs up for delivering with the energy and feeling that he did not.

"His passion for making sure that the economy grows for the middle class came through so I'm really proud of him," Obama said after watching the debate aboard Air Force One on the way home after a day of campaigning in battleground Florida.

Ryan came back at the vice president with harsh talking points, a flurry of statistics and a sharp economic warning: In another Obama term, he said, "Watch out, middle class, the tax bill's coming to you."

Romney, who watched the debate at the end of a campaign day in North Carolina, got on the phone to Ryan immediately afterward to congratulate him. Ann Romney told a rally in the western Michigan town of Hudsonville on Friday that the debate showed why her husband chose Ryan as his running mate.

"What he saw in Paul was a level head, very smart. You can tell, it came through, the kind of character that this man has," Mrs. Romney said.

Ryan declined to engage in any morning-after analysis while stopping for breakfast with his family Friday at Josie's diner in Lexington on his way out of Kentucky. All he would allow is that he felt great about how the debate turned out.

Attention now shifts to the two remaining debates between Obama and Romney: Tuesday's "town hall" style faceoff in Hempstead, N.Y., and a final showdown, over foreign policy, on Oct. 22 in Boca Raton, Fla.

And the campaigns get right back into the thick of it on Friday, looking for ways large and small to shift more voters their direction in the small number of states whose electoral votes are still up for grabs: Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, New Hampshire, Nevada, North Carolina, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Romney headed to Virginia and after was linking up with Ryan in Ohio. Biden and wife Jill will woo young voters at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Obama will spend a rare day in Washington, preparing for the next two debates and taking campaign contest winners out to eat.

With so little time left in the countdown to Nov. 6, "every day, every hour counts," said Rahm Emanuel, the Chicago mayor who served as Obama's first White House chief of staff. "Everything counts."

The president has set aside a serious chunk of time for preparation after being faulted for underestimating the importance of his first debate with Romney. He'll be hunkered down in Williamsburg, Va., from Saturday until Tuesday rehearsing with Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass, acting as a proxy for Romney.

Romney's return to Ohio this weekend signals the importance of a state seen by both sides as decisive to the whole election. Obama holds the edge there, polls show.

Obama had to hope that Biden's solid showing on Thursday was enough to shift a campaign dynamic that has had the momentum moving Romney's way since the first debate. Romney, for his part, had to hope Ryan's performance would keep up the good karma for the GOP.

The running mates clearly sensed that the stakes were higher than usual for their faceoff, and both played hardball throughout, frequently interrupting one another and challenging one another's assertions.

On television's split screens, Biden's body language ? a montage of pained smiles, winces, head shakes and eye rolls ? often screamed incredulity when Ryan was speaking.

"I know you're under a lot of duress to make up for lost ground," Ryan shot back at Biden at one point, "but I think people would be better served if we don't keep interrupting each other."

In one of the night's lighter moments, Ryan helpfully provided a translation of one of Biden's putdowns.

"This is a bunch of stuff," Biden said of Ryan's dismissive characterization of the president's Iran policy.

"What does that mean, a bunch of stuff?" asked moderator Martha Raddatz of ABC News.

"It's Irish," Ryan offered.

"It is," Biden agreed, to laughter from the audience. "We Irish call it malarkey."

At another point, Ryan used Biden's own history of gaffes to explain away Romney's much-criticized comment dismissing the 47 percent of Americans who pay no income taxes, a comment Biden brought up repeatedly after Obama had failed to mention it in his debate.

"I think the vice president very well knows that sometimes the words don't come out of your mouth the right way," Ryan said.

There were spirited exchanges on taxes, abortion, Medicare, Libya, and more. It may not have broken new ground, but the conversation gave viewers a clear illustration of the sharp choices before them come Election Day.

"In case you haven't noticed, we have strong disagreements," Biden said in his closing statement. And then he distilled the Democrats' campaign pitch into a simple bid to give anxious Americans "a little bit of peace of mind."

Ryan then spoke of the "big choice" in this election, and argued that Obama had had his chance and failed.

"This is not what a real recovery looks like," he said. "You deserve better."

For all the political back-and-forth during the past two months, the race essentially stands where it was in August, before the two national political conventions, with the two candidates running about even in national polls.

There's been no shortage of drama in between: the revelation of Romney's caught-on-tape comment about the 47 percent, Biden's remark that the middle class has been "buried" in the past four years, Obama's weak showing in the first debate, the ongoing tussle over the administration's handling of the attack that left four Americans dead in Benghazi, Libya, and more.

With turnout critical, both campaigns are devoting considerable energy to ensuring that supporters are registered to vote and taking advantage of the early voting options available in many states. Nearly a million Americans already have voted.

The Democrats' monthlong "gotta vote" bus tour will be in Milwaukee on Friday, just in time to rev up supporters for the opening of Wisconsin's early voting season on Monday.

And both sides are keeping up the push for campaign contributions to keep the battleground-state airwaves full of political ads. Within a few hours of the debate, Romney, Obama and Biden all emailed supporters asking for more cash.

ChannelTrends: How to Sell the Full Business Benefits of Unified ...

Have you been in the market for a new vehicle lately or just checked out the latest cars on display at the dealership? If so, you likely saw vehicles that incorporate some cutting edge communications systems?including General Motors? OnStar, Ford?s SYNC and Hyundai?s BlueLink. While these packages are tailored to the everyday needs of the average driver, tying in apps and voice control options to improve safety and convenience, they also increase productivity for mobile workers.

These computer-driven systems open and read email, offer turn-by-turn directions more responsive than standard GPS, check voice mail and text messages, and locate the closest ATM or parking garage. The latest versions even include an Internet ?hot spot.? When connected to the user?s smart phone, it creates a mobile communications platform with all the functionality of a remote office.

Those capabilities may be leap years ahead of the technology in most cars on the road, but their value and flexibility are rather basic compared with the latest unified communications (UC) solutions. To get a maximum return on their investment, businesses have to get the greatest return possible on each of their investments and tech systems are no exception. UC can help businesses make the most of their communications and computer infrastructure, integrating a number of business tools with their normal phone features and applications.

The basic systems include instant messaging, presence information, VoIP, call control, video conferencing and speech recognition. When solution providers integrate these features with each of their clients? critical business tools, it multiplies the value and speed of their entire infrastructure. For example, by typing in an organization?s CRM application, an incoming customer or prospect call could automatically pull up the account information. That improves response time and ensures that the person answering the phone has access to the latest information available to close sales or solve a problem.

One of the biggest hurdles facing widespread UC adoption is awareness and understanding. In a 2011 study conducted by CompTIA, 80 percent of channel partners stated that further clarity was needed to improve the sales and marketing process. That research also showed that 49 percent of solution providers expected UC spending to exceed other IT expenditures, creating a great opportunity for those who could properly define and sell UC?s benefits.

The latest workplace trends continue to support the growth of UC, including increases in mobility and the remote workforce, IT consumerization, mobile device management, bring your own device (BYOD) and cloud computing. Each can create new opportunities for a solution provider business, as long as it has the technical skills and abilities to understand its clients? business needs.

Those are all areas of focus for the CompTIA Unified Communications Community. This member-led peer group has been actively engaged in designing and developing a number of UC-specific training and education programs for the IT channel. The community is a great forum for solution providers looking to build a new practice with this expertise, as well as those looking to enhance their existing specialty operations.

The group portfolio is impressive, with materials describing specific opportunities available in UC-related areas and offering valuable tips on getting started. These materials include:

  • Quick Start Guide to Unified Communications.
  • Quick Start Guide to Audio-Visual Integration Opportunities.
  • Quick Start Guide to Telecom and IT Partnerships.
  • 10-Week Guide to Unified Communications.

Of course, attending group meetings ? live or virtual ? is also educational, with state-of-the-industry presentations and a myriad of networking opportunities. Interested in joining, or learning more about the UC Community? Contact Katherine Hunt at Kate.Hunt@CompTIA.org.

Brian Sherman is founder of Tech Success Communications, specializing in editorial content and consulting for the IT channel. The I-Wave Receiver Turns Any iPod Dock Into a Wireless Music Player [Stuff We Like]

The I-Wave Receiver Turns Any iPod Dock Into a Wireless Music PlayerThere are a lot of great iPod docks out there, but if you've upgraded to an iPhone 5?or if you just want to use your Android phone with one?the I-Wave is a small Bluetooth adapter that attaches to any iPod-compatible dock.

The I-Wave is simple: just plug it into your iPod dock like you would any other iOS device, pair it to your phone via Bluetooth settings, and you'll be able to stream music wirelessly. It isn't the only device of its kind, but our friends at The Wirecutter tested out a few and found this to be the best one, not to mention pretty cheap at $25. It's far from perfect (check out the Wirecutter's review for more info), but if you need a quick and cheap way to get your music to an old dock, it'll probably do the trick.

CDC: Meningitis outbreak growing, 14 people dead

(AP) ? Federal health officials said they've tracked down more than 90 percent of the roughly 14,000 people who may have received contaminated steroid shots, urging anyone with early symptoms of potentially deadly meningitis to seek help fast.

Of the 170 people sickened in the outbreak, all but one have a rare fungal meningitis, and 14 have died, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday. One person identified by Michigan health officials received the steroid shot in the ankle and has an infection there. While the biggest concern is for people given the shots for back pain, the CDC said people who received the injections in joints should also be alert to signs of localized infection, including redness, pain, swelling and fever.

More than 50 vials of the steroid produced by a specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts, the New England Compounding Center, have been found contaminated with some sort of fungus, said Deborah Autor of the Food and Drug Administration. The investigation is continuing into how the contamination could have occurred.

But a Massachusetts official said Thursday that it appears the company violated state law governing how compounding pharmacies are supposed to work. They are not supposed to do large-scale production like a drug manufacturer, but to produce medication for patient-specific prescriptions, said Dr. Madeleine Biondolillo of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

"This organization chose to apparently violate the licensing requirements under which they were allowed to operate," she told reporters Thursday.

The pharmacy has recalled the steroid that was sent to clinics in 23 states, as well as everything else it makes.

Idaho becomes the 11th state to report at least one illness. The others are Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia.

90 Percent of Small Businesses Are Networking Online ? Social ...

social media logosSmall businesses are continuing to embrace online marketing and networking as essential tools for attracting new clients and customers. But, small business owners remain somewhat overwhelmed by the various digital marketing options now available.

According to a recent poll of more than 600 small business owners nationwide, nine out of 10 indicated they network online, and nearly 75 percent found virtual networking was as effective as networking face-to-face, if not more so.

In addition, nearly 80 percent of those surveyed stated that they obtained at least one-quarter of their new customers through online marketing efforts, with 5 percent claiming that all of their new customers came as a result of promoting their business via web channels.

With millions of Americans already shopping online ?and more projected to do so in the future ?it appears that small business owners realize how essential it is to have an online presence.

?Small businesses understand they need to go where their audience is,? explained?Pamela Springer, CEO of Manta, the company that conducted the survey.? ?Participating, networking and being found online is extremely important today in growing their business, so it?s not surprising that they are embracing the channel.?

Of course, recognizing the importance of online marketing and implementing a successful digital marketing strategy are two different matters.? Although more than 40 percent of respondents said they have a Facebook presence and feel ?it adds value to their marketing strategies, the other 58 percent admitted they have difficulty seeing how using Facebook could help them promote their businesses, or don?t have a Facebook presence at all.? Only one in 10 use LinkedIn for promotional purposes, and far fewer still tap into Google+, Twitter or Pinterest.? Even Groupon, a platform expressly designed to benefit brick and mortar businesses, was considered to be valuable by less than one percent of those surveyed.

Interestingly, nearly 25 percent of ?the small business owners surveyed said their company website drives the most business for them ?and a website is a simple place for busy small business owners to start driving awareness online.

?As 97 percent of consumers use the Internet to research products or services in their local area, and those searches regularly include company name, product or service, or business owner, it is critical small businesses build awareness of themselves and their company online,? BIA/Kelsey Program Director Jed Williams?concluded.

Let's Get Personal: A Update on My Journey so Far - Delicious ...

Let's Get Personal: A Update on My Journey so Far Follow Me on Pinterest Image credit

Hi all! It?s fall and it?s my favorite time of the year. The weather turns cool and crisp. The leaves start changing colors.?The?gorgeous Rocky Mountains start getting some snow on them. Love, love, love Fall in?Colorado! This is the time of year that makes me feel re-energized. I try to take advantage of the weather and take as many walks as possible, before the snow starts flying!

It is also a great time for reflection, at least for me. It has been awhile, so I thought it was time for me to post an update. I have been meaning to do updates every two weeks, but things have been hectic and I have been tired! If you want to read about my healing journey thus far, check out these posts:

What?s Been Going On In My Life?

As many of you know, I have been working with my Nutritional Therapist, Lydia from Divine Health, for a little over two months now. I contacted her back in July, because I wanted to start addressing some health problems that I have been having. Towards the middle of this summer, I was finally confident enough and in a place in my life where I could face them head on (though, it has been far from easy at times). I have gotten to know Lydia through the blogging network that we are both part of ? the Nourished Living Network ? and was confident in her skills and knowledge to help me.

In this post, I want to discuss a little bit about where I?ve been and where I?m going, as well as show you how Lydia has helped me and give a little public shout out to her for all of her hard work and help.

A Little About Me

A little refresher about me.?I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 6 years ago and was put on the regular T4 prescription that almost all other hypothyroid patients are put on. For the first few years, I felt OK. I never really had a lot of symptoms of low thyroid (that I noticed), it was just that my TSH was not ?normal?. However, this year, it hit me pretty hard that women with thyroid issues have a much harder time conceiving than other women. My husband and I hope to start a family in the next few years and that was motivation for me to finally stop living in denial and start addressing the issues. I had never had any advanced tests run, other than your standard tests that you get with your annual physical each year. So, I honestly had no idea what was going on with my body. All I knew is that I had a thyroid problem and that I was having more of the symptoms of low thyroid ? brain fog, mood swings, hair loss, fatigue, etc.

In August, I finally got the courage and went to my doctor for my annual physical. I had them run all of the thyroid tests that Lydia and I had discussed, which included thyroid antibody tests. The tests that we ran were:

  • TSH
  • Free T4
  • Free T3
  • Reverse T3
  • Thyroid Peroxidase AB (antibodies)
  • Thyroglobulin AB (antibodies)
  • Vitamin D levels

There were a few tests that my doctor refused to do, but I can always get those done on my own. The one that he didn?t run that I would like to run at some point is my iron labs (Ferritin, % Saturation, TIBC and serum iron), as my Naturopath thinks that I might be high iron. My MD poo-pooed the adrenal tests, so I did have to do that one on my own. Everyone had their own opinion of what the most important labs are to run, but this gives us a great starting point and keeps the costs?manageable.

My TSH is not as high as it has been in the past, but it still needs to be lower. My reverse T3 is very high, while my Free T3 is very low. My Free T4 was smack dab in the the middle of their ?normal? range. My vitamin D levels were also in the middle of their range. And, the thyroid antibody results were off the charts. With that, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto?s disease, which is an autoimmune thyroid disease. I was not really surprised with this diagnosis. I was however?overwhelmed?with the amount of information out there about how to treat it. At that moment, I was very happy to have someone who could help guide me.

Taking the?First?Healing Steps

As Lydia educated me about the workings of an autoimmune disease, the thyroid, etc., I began learning that because the thyroid is so complex, there is always going to be adrenal and pituitary issues that go along with the thyroid issues. We did the saliva cortisol test and did see that there are some adrenal issues that need to be addressed as well. My morning cortisol levels are very, very high. My noon reading is slightly depressed, and my afternoon and evening readings are normal. Honestly, it wasn?t as bad as I expected, but there are some areas that need work, primarily that morning reading. Your adrenals are so important to thyroid health, that this really is the next step in my healing journey. One of the first things we did was introduce a high-quality Vitamin C to my supplementation, because Vitamin C is one of the most important adrenal nutrients.

The first thing that we did was?eliminated?all possible allergens: gluten, grains, dairy, and legumes. Any time there is an autoimmune disease, you want to?eliminate?allergens that are known to create inflammation and overall body upset.

At the same time, we?eliminated?all sugar (even non-sugars like stevia and xylitol), in order to really get my blood sugar stable. Blood sugar issues often go hand-in-hand with adrenal and thyroid issues. Also, your blood sugar is the 2nd most tightly regulated system in the body, so if it?s out of whack, then everything else is out of whack.

Next, we started adding in carefully selected supplements. I don?t like taking lots of supplements, but when you are treating specific issues, there is no way around it. We are gradually adding specific?supplements?in, so that we don?t overwhelm my system.

The thing that I appreciate most about Lydia is her very systematic approach to illness. She sees the body as a whole, yet at the same time, she sees that there are many separate systems of the body that must be running smoothly in order for the whole body to be healthy. One of the most important things that I have learned from her is that you must, must, must fix the foundation, before you can ever fix a specific illness. I went to her wanting to heal my Hashimoto?s disease and have since realized that in order to do that, we need to fix a lot of other areas of my body that are out of whack. I had no idea how tightly things were connected! Like I said, her approach is systematic, so she identified the places that we needed to start, and has been working on helping me fix and strengthen my foundation. She knows that the ultimate goal is to get my thyroid issues addressed, but she also knows that in order to do that, we have to start at the bottom and work our way up. These are things that I never knew, so if it were not for her guidance, I would be floundering out in the wide open ocean, all alone!

So, Where Are We Now?

I am a long way from optimum health, but I am closer now than I was this time last year. And, I am certain that this same time next year, I will be looking back in amazement of how far I?ve come. The last couple months have not been easy. Nothing about this has been easy. I have been?inundated?with information ? lots of which is conflicting because it comes from a wide array of sources. While I?appreciate?that I have Google, friends, and family who share information with me, I have to admit, it?s overwhelming, because everyone has their own opinion. I have been becoming more?in-tune?with my body and more aware of my symptoms. Mentally and emotionally, all of this has taken a toll too (more on that below).

The phrase that I keep reminding myself is ?Let go and let Lydia?. Seems silly, but if you knew me, you would understand why I have to repeat that to myself. I am rather high-strung. Partially by personality, and partially (I think) due to my adrenal and thyroid issues. I am the type of person who feels that they have to be in control of every little thing in my life, and when things happen beyond my control, I don?t handle it very well. I am one who feels like I need to have all of the answers right now. But, when things like this come along, you realize that you are not, and cannot, be completely in control of?everything. You have to learn to let go and just make the best decisions you can each day. It?s also important to let people help you, which is also not an easy thing for me!

Healing the body is a slow process and there is no magical pill to fix it all, much to my disappointment. I have always been an overachiever, so even when it comes to my health, I continuously feel like I could be doing more. Whenever I go to Lydia about all the things that I feel like I should be doing, Lydia assures me that we are already being rather aggressive in my treatment, and encourages me to take comfort in that fact. Doing too much, too fast can set you up for failure in the long-term. In just the last two months, we have made some very drastic changes to my diet and lifestyle and I am learning to be OK with where I am at this moment.

Recently, Lydia told me that she feels like we need to spend some time on my emotional and mental healing that it sunk in. Healing the body can be stressful and overwhelming and scary. It can wreak havoc on your mind (if you let it, which I do) and there really is a good deal of emotional healing that must go along with the physical healing. Our body is so complex, it?s amazing any of us function at all. In my case, I have some personal (mental) roadblocks that need to be addressed before much more healing can take place. And, you know what? Lydia understands this and is helping me identify tools that will help me work through those issues, because she knows how vital the mental healing is to the healing of the body. Again, this is something that I would not have known, if it wasn?t for her insight!

Since starting work with Lydia, I have seen noticeable improvements in my health. I have started to lose weight, which I never in a million years felt that I would. From my heaviest point about two years ago, I am down 30 pounds. In the last couple months, I have lost around 15 pounds. The nice thing about this is that the weight has come off without me trying. I?believe?that it has happened because I have?eliminated?allergens (which can inhibit your body from losing weight), I have upped my coconut oil intake (I?m writing a more detailed post on that), and I have started taking some very high-quality supplements that seem to be giving me vital nutrients that I was missing.

I have also noticed improvement in my energy levels and my focus (granted, I have my good days and my bad days, but that?s to be expected). I have noticed improvements in my gut health (helped by an increase in probiotic foods,?elimination?of allergens, and supplementing hydrochloric acid). We are still at the very beginning of my healing journey, so I know that there are many more improvements to come. I just have to be patient and have faith that my body is healing. There?s a lot going on inside of me that I can?t see or feel, but I know that I am finally on the right track and that I will achieve optimum wellness and my health goals.

Lydia is kind, gentle, and systematic. She is my cheerleader. She is my support. She is my friend. If I did not have her and her expertise, I would not be in the place I am today. As a matter of fact, I might still be avoiding my health issues, just hoping they?d go away. Choosing to face whatever health problems we might have is scary. But, it?s a lot less scary when you have someone to guide you and support you through it.

I cannot speak more highly of my experience of working with Lydia. I also cannot speak more strongly about the need for you to contact her. If you are facing any sort of health issue and are feeling alone and overwhelmed, then you owe it to yourself to at least speak with her once. Sure, we all can research stuff on Google, but how far does that really get us? If you?re like me, it gets confusing, frustrating, and overwhelming. Why not save that energy and let Lydia, who has professional training and an education in this arena, help us? Let go and let Lydia. Come on, say it with me.

How to Increase Web Traffic for Free

Search Engine Optimization or SEO as it is called is the most popular means to increase online marketing and improve business. The best way to direct traffic to your website is through meaningful SEO content that needs to be catchy, precise and relevant.

Though it costs quite a bit of money to divert traffic the SEO way, there are several tricks in the trade, following which you can increase the flow of traffic towards your website. The great thing is that there are several ways to increase web traffic free of charge. Let?s take a look at how greatly you can increase traffic and subsequently increase your presence and business online.

  • The first thing you need to do is to design a website that is attractive, and it is important that the website needs to be user-friendly and easily navigable. Ensure that the navigation to various pages is quick and easy. Once you have this in position, you also need to make the website search-engine friendly. Contact various popular search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, MSN, etc and ensure that your website is listed, as this helps improve page rankings. Use appropriate keywords in the content, and correct html tags to enable search engine algorithms to classify your website accordingly.
  • You are bound to have affiliates in your online marketing endeavor. As they work in tandem, it pays to give due coverage to the directories the affiliates are associated with. This increases free traffic and improves business on a mutual basis. It?s not just affiliates, you can have links that lead to other websites who are not your direct competitors. It is a great idea to exchange notes and ideas with other site owners and maintain a healthy relationship. This helps you keep abreast of the latest happenings.
  • Forums are the hottest spots where there is a lot of activity. People discuss hot topics and you will be able to pick up a thread that leads to more traffic and business. There are a lot of questions posted on forums and if you are informed enough to have the answers, you get noticed immediately. While answering any of the questions, you can leave behind a link and expect traffic following you without a fail.
  • Similarly there?s a whole lot of people blogging on the web. You can easily locate current blogs on topics related to your site and business. Sharing views and ideas with like-minded people by leaving meaningful comments at the appropriate blog sites will certainly increase traffic. Your comment needs to be approved and get accepted after which it will remain permanently on the site.
  • Perfect the art of creating good content. Use appropriate keywords at strategic places and have the keywords well-distributed. The very idea behind a keyword is that people initiate searches based on regularly used words. When such words perfectly fit into the content to make sense, the link is established and regular traffic is ensured.

There are several classified advertisement sites that offer to post your advertisements free of charge. The sites like craigslist, freeadvertisingforum, gumtree and adgridwork offer free services that you should take advantage of.

You could also join the free safe-lists where people have agreed to send and receive emails even if they are promotional in nature. There is no threat of being targeted as a spammer as people featuring in the list have voluntarily agreed to receive emails.

Home field advantage wasn?t so helpful for the Corsair cross country teams last week, as they ran at Kenneth Hahn Regional Park at the Western State Conference Preview on Friday afternoon. With near perfect weather conditions for running, the men?s team kept up a better pace throughout the meet than their fellow women, who appeared to struggle.
The Lady Corsairs were first to race, running a total of three miles. They did not place in the top fifteen runners, who were rewarded with T-shirts. The men however ran a total of four miles, which is just one extra lap around the park. The men were not able to place in the top 15 either.
The ladies had a hard time keeping up with the top runners, but freshman Inez Alvarez, who came in 84th place, stated, ?The hope for my team this year is to make it to the state finals. We have been putting in a lot of hard work and dedication this year.?
?Because we were hosting the meet, I felt like I needed to work ten times harder. I need to represent my school well,? said Alvarez.
Even though, the Corsairs did not place at the very top, their overall scores ranked them right in the middle of the 10 teams for men and 13 teams for women. The men?s cross country team ranked 5th out of ten averaging 23:43, and scoring 111. The women?s cross country team ranked 8th out of 13, averaging 24:02 and an overall score of 212.
?By and large, the teams are looking good. We have put in a lot of miles and hard work and trained for this meet,? said cross country Coach Eric Barron.
The cross country teams will travel to Santa Barbra to race against the Gauchos in the Santa Barbara Invitational, to prepare for the conference championship which will be held on the same course on October 23.

New study indicates possible usefulness of IGF-1 in Alzheimer's disease treatment

Chevy Chase, MD Low serum levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) are associated with Alzheimer's Disease in men, but not women, according to a recent study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM).

IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 are involved in longevity and could be beneficial to cognition, especially in Alzheimer's disease where experimental studies have shown that IGF-1 opposes the main pathological processes of Alzheimer's disease. The current study investigated the relationship between IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 serum levels and cognitive impairment, including Alzheimer's disease.

"At this time, no curative treatment is available for Alzheimer's disease so focus on modifiable associated factors is of major importance," said Emmanuelle Duron, MD, PhD, of Broca Hospital in Paris, France and lead author of the study. "Our research shows a possible usefulness of IGF-1 in Alzheimer's disease treatment, especially in early stages."

In this multicentric cross-sectional study, researchers measured IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 serum levels in 694 elderly subjects (218 men and 476 women). Of the study participants, 481 had memory complaints and were diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or mild cognitive impairment. Duron and her colleagues found that IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 serum levels were significantly associated with cognitive status in men, but not in women.

"Our cross-sectional association does not mean a causal relationship," notes Duron. "Our results justify a longitudinal study to evaluate whether circulating IGF-1/IGFBP-3 are predictive of cognitive decline according to gender."

###

Other researchers working on the study include: Benoit Funalot, Nadege Brunel, Cecile Viollet, Jacques Epelbaum and Yves le Bouc of Institut National de la Sant et de la Recherche Mdicale (INSERM) in Paris France; Joel Coste and Laurent Quinquis of Hotel Dieu in Paris, France; Joel Belmin of Charles Foix Hospital in Seine, France; Pierre Jouanny of Centre Hospitalo in Amiens, France; Florence Pasquier of Hopital Roger Salengro in Lille, France; Jean-Marc Treluyer of France Unite de Recherche Clinique in Paris, France; and Olivier Hanon of Broca Hospital in Paris, France.

The article, "Insulin-like Growth Factor-I and Insulin-like Growth Factor Binding Protein-3 in Alzheimer's Disease," appears in the December 2012 issue of JCEM.

Rangers clinch spots for 3 teams

After a rare Joe Nathan blown save and a rough loss in the opener, the Rangers came back to beat the Angels 8-7 in the second game of Sunday?s doubleheader?and clinch at least a wild card berth.

Mike Napoli again made some noise against his former team, homering twice and matching his career high with six RBI. He?s hit .396 with 12 homers, 10 doubles and 19 walks in 111 at-bats versus the Halos in two years as a member of the Rangers.

The Rangers? outburst gave Derek Holland a win after he allowed seven runs in 6 2/3 innings. He became the fifth pitcher this season to give up seven runs in a win. One of the previous four was Ervin Santana, who took the loss for the Angels tonight. He gave up six runs in 2 2/3 innings to end the regular season 9-13 with a 5.16 ERA.

The result clinched postseason berths for the Orioles and Yankees (both 92-67), as the Angels (88-71) are no longer possibility to overtake either with three games remaining. The Angels also fell three back of the A?s (91-68) with three to play.

The Rangers (93-66) head to Oakland with a two-game lead in the AL West. The A?s must win only one of the three games to clinch a wild card berth and eliminate the Angels and Rays (88-71).
