Chinese New Year Dos and Don'ts

Chinese New Year is the biggest celebration of the year for many, filled with traditions such as visiting relatives, giving out lai see?(luck money) envelopes?and sharing big dinners with family and friends. Here are some New Year traditions that can bring your Lunar New Year off to a good start. ?

1. No cleaning.?It's unlucky to clean during New Year's Day, so all brooms, brushes, dusters, dust pans and cleaning equipment should be put away. Sweeping on this day means that good fortune might be swept away. Does that mean you should leave your house a mess? Heck no: all your spring cleaning and scrubbing should have already been done before the big day.?

2. Start off the new year on the right note.?Everything on New Year's Day is said to set the precedent for the remainder of the year. Swearing, talking about death or about the dead is generally taboo.?Outstanding debts and overdue bills should be paid by New Year, according to tradition, or it will bring bad financial luck. Be square with the library, and pay off late book return fees.?

3. No haircuts.?Haircuts should?be delayed until the second day of the second lunar month. Why??According to an old legend, a poor barber loved his uncle. Lacking the funds to give him a lavish New Year gift, he gave him a flattering new haircut. The uncle was so pleased with it that he asked for a haircut on every New Year's Day. But after that uncle died, the barber's grief overwhelmed him with the coming of each new year.

Over time, after being associated with the barber's story, haircuts became a "don't" during the New Year. There is also the theory that using scissors during the New Year will cut off good fortune.

4. Wear red, but don't wear black or white.?Red is a lucky colour, and bright fiery red is said to keep bad spirits away. Wearing red in abundance during the New Year is good, but don't show up to celebrations wearing black or white, as they symbolize bad luck and death.?

5. Choose new clothes and new shoes. For good luck, all the clothing you wear on Chinese New Year should be new, to symbolize a fresh new start.?
