5 Fast Facts About Weight Loss, Health And Fitness

According to medical studies, here are 5 fast facts about weight loss, health and fitness?

1. If you want to lose weight, reducing car travel can be as effective as cutting calories.

University of Illinois researchers found that daily car travel and calorie consumption both impact your weight. Even a small reduction in either one appears to decrease your BMI (body mass index). The researchers believe that the less time you?re in a car, the more physically active you?re likely to be? and therefore, the less you?ll weigh.

2. Eating gazpacho regularly may reduce high blood pressure.

According to a study published in Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases, researchers were surprised to find that eating gazpacho regularly can reduce blood pressure? even though gazpacho contains a fair amount of salt.

Of course, those of you who have read my diet book, I Love to Cheat, already know that one of the meals we found to be most effective in reducing high blood pressure contained a high level of salt. Maybe it?s time to revisit some of the medical community?s assumptions about food and high blood pressure. It appears that some foods may counteract the effect of salt on high blood pressure.

In the case of gazpacho, the researchers noted that the ingredients of gazpacho ? tomatoes, garlic, olive oil and cucumbers ? have been shown individually to reduce high blood pressure in previous scientific studies. So it makes sense that combining those same ingredients would produce a meal that has a similar effect.

Despite these studies, you should always consult your doctor before you change your diet, especially if your goal is to reduce your blood pressure through diet.

3. Eating bread daily may improve your heart health.

Researchers at the University of Barcelona found that people who eat bread every day ? whether white or whole wheat ? have higher levels of HDL (good) cholesterol, lower levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and a lower insulin concentration (which may protect against the development of Type 2 diabetes). Of course, eating bread should be part of a balanced diet.

4. Overweight women are more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is believed to be an autoimmune disease that causes pain, swelling, stiffness and loss of function of multiple joints. RA can also affect other organs in the body.

Researchers from Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health and Brigham and Women?s Hospital reviewed the data from two studies. When compared to normal weight women, overweight women (with a BMI of 25 to 29.9) had a 19% greater risk of developing RA in the first study and a 78% greater risk in the second study.

Women who were obese (with a BMI of 30 or more) had an 18% greater risk of developing RA in the first study and a 73% greater risk in the second study.

5. Physical activity during leisure time may increase your life expectancy by as much as 5 years.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults under 65 years old engage in moderate aerobic activity (where you can talk, but not sing) for 2-1/2 hours per week or vigorous aerobic activity (where you can only say a few words before becoming breathless) for 1-1/4 hours per week.

When evaluating cancer risk, researchers associated with the National Cancer Institute looked at physical activity data on over 650,000 adults (with most at least 40 years old). They found that adults who got the recommended level of activity lived almost 3-1/2 years longer. Adults who engaged in twice the recommended level of activity lived over 4 years longer. Even people who got only half the recommended level of activity lived almost 2 years longer.

The correlation between exercise and life expectancy was the same for men and women, but blacks lived longer than whites. Also, people with a history of cancer or heart disease had a greater life expectancy from physical activity than did people without a history of those diseases.

Regular physical activity also lengthened the lives of people of every weight group, whether normal weight, overweight or obese. Even so, obesity was generally associated with a shorter life. Individuals who were both inactive and obese had a life expectancy that was 5 to 7 years less than individuals who were both moderately active and of normal weight.
