The Three-Ingredient Winter Cocktail | Women's Health Food Blog ...

Twelve-ingredient tiki drinks are fine in the summer, when a little melting ice in your glass feels just right. But it?s winter, and when you want a drink to warm you up from the inside out, you don?t want to wait for it.

Andrew Halden, beverage director for the Whitehall Bar + Kitchen and Highlands restaurants in New York City, has just the thing.

His seasonal riff on a classic cocktail subs beet puree for vermouth, adding a lovely purplish color, cranberry sauce tartness, and a dose of potassium, B vitamins, and antioxidants to your glass.

You can use beet juice from the store, too, but Halden warns to look out for added sugar or the drink might end up too sweet. If you plan ahead, roast some beets with honey and thyme and puree them with a little extra water. And no, Halden reassures, ?this won?t taste like a vegetable smoothie.?

Beet Negroni

1 oz. beet puree
1 oz. Campari
1 oz. gin
fresh rosemary sprig, for garnish

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake thoroughly and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with rosemary.

Uninsured patients sue Chicago nonprofit hospital

A lawsuit filed Thursday claims a nonprofit hospital in northwest Chicago failed to provide charity care to two low-income, uninsured patients.

The case reopens a longstanding controversy in Illinois over whether hospitals are doing enough charitable work to qualify for lucrative tax exemptions.

The lawsuit claims Swedish Covenant Hospital repeatedly lost one patient's financial assistance application and threatened to send her bill to a collection agency.

It states the hospital incorrectly told another patient she was ineligible for assistance and demanded cash from her.

Swedish Covenant spokeswoman Leigh Ginther says every patient who is identified as uninsured is given an application for charity care and a personal explanation of the process. The hospital reported $6.2 million in charity care expenses last year, nearly 3 percent of its net revenue.

The National Labor Relations Board regional office issued a complaint against Minneapolis-based Teamsters Local 974 after the union reportedly failed to follow proper procedures regarding an employee's request to refrain from paying a portion of his union dues.

A former employee with New Brighton Ford recently requested to stop paying union dues that supported nonrepresentational activities, according to Marlin Osthus, regional director for the Minneapolis National Labor Relations Board office.

His request is protected under union members' "Beck rights," a term coined from a 1988 Supreme Court decision that ruled unions could not require members to pay for their political activities.

Actor who apparently killed landlady not on drugs

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A former "Sons of Anarchy" actor who was the lone suspect in the killing of his landlady did not have drugs in his system when he died, according to an autopsy report released Thursday.

Authorities had been interested in whether Johnny Lewis was on drugs or medication when he apparently killed Catherine Davis in her home and then fell to his death in her driveway.

Lewis had recently been released from jail and had a string of drug-related arrests before the killing. His attorney had speculated he might have been in a drug-induced psychosis when he killed Davis.

Toxicology results on Johnny Lewis found no traces of cocaine, alcohol, marijuana or any other types of drugs in the actor's system. Officials checked for anti-psychotic drugs as well as psychedelic drugs.

An autopsy report noted that Lewis had nail marks on both sides of his neck when he died and had suffered partial strangulation. His death was ruled accidental because there was no evidence he attempted to kill himself or had been pushed.

Police believe Lewis fell while trying to flee the home after killing Davis, 81, who operated a retreat for writers and actors out of her home.

Lewis had played Kip "Half-Sack" Epps on the TV drama "Sons of Anarchy" in 2008 and 2009 before his character was killed off.

He had been arrested three times during the past year. Probation officials earlier this year expressed concern about Lewis' mental health and his danger to others.

A probation officer who evaluated Lewis' case after he attempted to break into the home of a woman wrote that he was being "very concerned for the well-being of not only the community but that of the defendant."

The report added Lewis suffered from some form of chemical dependency and mental health issue, and was a transient.

"Given this, (Lewis) will continue to be a threat to any community he may reside," it said

The break-in attempt came about six weeks after the actor hit two men over the head with a bottle during a fight.

Lewis' attorney, Jonathan Mandel, said after his client's death that drugs may have been a factor in the deaths. He said he recommended treatment for Lewis but he declined it.

UN nuclear chief expresses concern for inspectors

VIENNA (AP) ? The head of the U.N. nuclear agency suggested Thursday that his inspectors in Iran are coming under increased duress amid fears that Tehran might be aspiring to make atomic arms. He would not say what kind of pressure they face.

Yukiya Amano's International Atomic Energy Agency has a team of experts monitoring known Iranian nuclear programs and probing suspicions that there might be other, undisclosed activities focused on nuclear weapons research and development.

Iran denies any interest in such arms and says it has never tried to develop them. It also dismisses concerns that it is enriching uranium for possible use as the core of a warhead, saying it wants only to produce reactor fuel. The agency says that its attempts to probe for evidence of suspected weapons research have been rebuffed for more than three years.

Israel in particular says the diplomatic window is closing as Tehran increases its capacity to enrich to a point that is only a step away from production of weapons-grade uranium. It says it will never tolerate an Iran capable of making such warheads, heightening fears that it may opt to strike the Islamic republic's nuclear facilities.

Amano told reporters that diplomatic efforts still have some traction. At the same time, it was the first time he expressed concern for the IAEA experts in Iran, telling reporters that his agency is "giving high priority for the safety of our inspectors and we are taking all the measures needed to protect them."

Asked for details, he said the pressure on the inspectors was "difficult to define," adding: "We need to protect our inspectors in order that they can discharge their responsibilities."

Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran's envoy to the IAEA, did not respond to phone messages seeking comment.

Earlier, Amano told a meeting of the IAEA's 35-nation board that he could not provide "credible assurance" for Tehran's claims that all of its atomic activities are peaceful because of insufficient cooperation with his agency ? a concern he has expressed before.

Do You Know What the Main Causes of Hypertension?

?

Hypertension is the elevation of blood pressure above or 14x9 140x90 mmHg in adults over 18 years as the home of at least fifteen minutes and confirmed in three measurements during several visits to the doctor.

?

Rating:

  • Normotensive: lower pressures than or equal to 120/80 mmHg
  • Prehypertensive: pressures between 121/81 - 139/89 mmHg
  • Grade I hypertensive: pressures between 140/90 - 159/99 mmHg
  • Hypertensive grade II: Pressures greater than or equal to 160/100 mmHg

The main risk factors for hypertension are:

  • Black Race
  • Obesity
  • High salt intake
  • Drinking
  • Sedentary
  • High Cholesterol
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Smoking

Once diagnosed, patients with hypertension should promote changes in lifestyle, such as:

  • Reduce the weight
  • Start exercising
  • Quitting smoking
  • Reduce intake of alcohol
  • Reduce salt intake
  • Reduce consumption of saturated fat
  • Increase intake of fruits and vegetables
Hypertension is considered a silent disease because in most cases, symptoms are not observed in any patient. When these occur, are vague and common to other diseases, such as headache, dizziness, tiredness, nausea, shortness of breath and nosebleeds. This lack of symptoms can make the patient forget to take your medicine or even question your need, which leads to many complications.

?

Hypertension is a chronic disease that, if not treated and managed properly, can lead to complications that can affect other organs.

?

Hypertension is associated with a number of other diseases such as:

  • Heart Failure
  • Myocardial infarction
  • Arrhythmias
  • Sudden Death
  • Aneurysms
  • Loss of vision (hypertensive retinopathy)
  • Renal
  • Ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke (stroke)

The individual with severe hypertension or prolonged, untreated, can present with symptoms such as headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, shaking and blurred vision due to injuries affecting the brain, eyes, heart and kidneys. Occasionally, individuals with severe hypertension are suffering from drowsiness or even coma. This disorder, called hypertensive encephalopathy, requires emergency treatment.

?

Malignant Hypertension and Hypertensive Crisis

?

Malignant hypertension is a medical emergency and occurs when there is a sudden increase in blood pressure levels, causing acute injury of important organs such as kidneys, heart, brain and eyes. The malignant hypertension typically presents with pressure values above 220 mmHg by 120.

?

A hypertensive crisis begins suddenly and the person may have:

  • Feeling of malaise
  • Anxiety and agitation
  • Severe headache
  • Dizziness
  • Blurring of vision
  • Chest pain
  • Coughing and shortness of breath

The crisis is accompanied by signs and symptoms in other organs:

  • As a result of kidney injury, there is presence of blood and protein in urine.
  • Cardiac disorders can cause shortness of breath, chest pain, angina, and arrhythmia.
  • In the nervous system, cerebrovascular accident (stroke), seizures, impaired speech and movement.
  • In the vision, blurring or bleeding.

The blood pressure should be lowered immediately with oral and intravenous medications Special, used by physicians under strict control in intensive care units. Ie: in cases of hypertensive emergencies, call a physician: depending on the situation, the medicine you take may not usually be the most appropriate treatment for the situation. That way you can avoid further complications to your health.

Laura Ingraham goes off the air ? to pursue modern dance?

Laura Ingraham, a conservative talk radio host, has left the Talk Radio Network after 9 years. Laura Ingraham jokes that she plans to pursue modern dance and the xylophone. If those don't work out, she'll go back to radio.

By Staff,?Associated Press / November 28, 2012

She said Tuesday that she's leaving her distributor, Talk Radio Network, after more than nine years because her contract is up. Ingraham said she is in discussions with other distributors about her show, which currently airs on 325 stations nationally.

On her website, Ingraham wrote:

"After more than 9 years with the distributor Talk Radio Network, I decided it was time to move on. After much thought and reflection, I have decided to pursue my first loves--modern dance and the xylophone. In the highly unlikely event that these efforts do not prove fruitful, I intend to return to radio.

Seriously--to the more than 300 stations that carry the Laura Ingraham Show and to all my loyal listeners, I feel the time is right to expand and retool my radio program and to explore other syndication options, which I am now actively pursuing. During this brief hiatus, my team and I will continue to deliver thought-provoking and entertaining analysis via my website."

Talkers magazine says the conservative Ingraham is the most-listened to woman on radio, with an estimated 5.75 million listeners a week. Talkers said that ranks her among the top eight radio hosts overall.

Talkers also says that Ingraham's departure "comes as no surprise to industry observers who have long known of the not-so-secret friction that has existed for years between Ingraham and TRN?s top management. ?TALKERS has reached out to Talk Radio Network for information but has yet to receive a response."

On Tuesday, Ingraham's time slot on the Talk Radio Network was filled by Tammy Bruce. Bruce's own website describes her as "an openly gay, pro-choice, gun owning, pro-death penalty, voted-for-President Reagan progressive feminist."

In the meantime, Ingraham said she'll keep her opinions flowing on her website, on Twitter and during Fox News Channel appearances.

I purchased a brand new British registered vehicle tax free in Germany. The vehicle was funded through a German finance company on what I thought was an unsecured loan (the contract was in German). I have since sold the vehicle and continue to pay the loan from the UK.

A UK company who manages the German bank's UK debt has told me the loan was secured on the vehicle so in effect I have sold a vehicle to a UK dealer whilst it still had outstanding German finance on it. What are the consequences of my actions and what would happen if I stop paying the German loan when they would wish to recover the vehicle which i have no clue where it is... I sold it 12 months ago. To be clear, the UK company managing the debt does not own it - they are acting on the German bank's behalf.

I understand the error of not seeking a translated contract however the excitement of a brand new vehicle perhaps steered my enthusiasm to complete the deal!

Asset Management the Siemens Way | HealthWorks Collective

Watch your assets! In healthcare delivery this has always been true and, with the advent of the Affordable Care Act, popularly known as Obamacare, there is a more pressing need than ever before to be smart about the systems you buy for the long run.

Siemens Healthcare has a program it calls Installed Base Management, which is basically a holistic plan for conserving imaging systems and updating in an intelligent and cost effective way. At RSNA2012, I sat down with Sabine Duffy-Sandstrom, a Siemens VP in the Customer Solutions Group, and one of her customers, Jim Sapienza, administrator of imaging services at Tacoma, Wash.-based MultiCare. I had to admit that it seemed odd to be discussing managing existing systems rather than the latest and greatest thing since sliced bread -- a RSNA hallmark.

?We have customers who want to replace systems because they?ve gotten old, we have customers who want to add options to their current systems -- they have different ways they want to maximize their systems,? said Duffy. ?It?s really about rather than selling them something, asking them what?s your plan? So we offer something we call a Customer Development Session. We use econometrics to examine the lay of the geographic area with population, institutions and outlook for disease. We also offer utilization management that examines the type of exams being done and their frequency. So we can use how the customer uses his assets and what the demand might be.

?The third component is what the customer wants to do, what their mission may be to add programs or whatever,? she continued. ?What comes out in the end is an asset management plan, usually a three- to five-year plan. And we offer this for free. But it isn?t Siemens trying to sell something necessarily; it can mean combining systems, eliminating assets or replacing one. When something changes in the reimbursement landscape, like Obamacare, people now are assessing whether they have the right mix of systems and do I need to upgrade. It?s also not just capability of systems, it?s staffing. You want your techs to be able to run any new systems, or upgraded ones.?

Siemens did a Customer Development Session with MultiCare Health Systems, which has five hospitals south of Seattle, a medical group of 400 physicians and which partners with three radiology groups. ?We looked at equipment utilization and econometrics of demand for services and worked together to see what is needed,? said Sapienza. ?Now we have monthly conversations that are not about Siemens trying to sell us things, but what are the needs and what are the solutions that Siemens can offer.

?A good example,? Sapienza continued ?is with CT and MRI. The machines are workhorses and as long as you maintain them well and update components, the core guts of the machines can last a long time without having to swap in a whole new machine. Our health system can no longer sustain changing machines every five years.? He added that the conversations are also about whether all the various systems are being utilized in a cost-effective way.

Duffy said the program is a win-win. Customers are retained with smart evaluations and when new equipment is needed, Siemens has solutions at hand. By using some optimizing techniques, MultiCare has been able to save money on replacement costs. ?Plus the conversations we?ve been having for the past few years, we?ve been anticipating now what?s happening in health care reform now,? Sapienza. ?Instead of billing on volume, we are billing for value.?

?Everybody talks about asset management these days,? Duffy opined, ?but we are really doing it.?

University of Kentucky's Human Development Institute (HDI ...

Lexington, KY, November 29, 2012 ?(PR.com)? he University of Kentucky's Human Development Institute (HDI) is proud to announce the launch of its National Center for Prenatal and Postnatal Down Syndrome Resources at www.DownSyndromeDiagnosis.org. The National Center includes the following medically reviewed programs: the recently updated Brighter Tomorrows website, the Lettercase/Kennedy Foundation booklets, and the Down Syndrome Pregnancy books and website. The formation of this National Center is particularly important at this time as prenatal testing technology continues to advance, and medical providers and expectant parents need support to understand a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome.

In 2008, HDI created Brighter Tomorrows, a comprehensive multi-media website about Down syndrome for medical professionals and new and expectant parents in English and Spanish, with funding and support provided by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities. In the past year, HDI has also begun administering the Kennedy Foundation's "Understanding a Down Syndrome Diagnosis" booklet in English and Spanish at www.lettercase.org and Down Syndrome Pregnancy at www.DownSyndromePregnancy.org, a website with resources for expectant mothers. These programs have been supporting expectant parents and medical professionals for the past five years and will now be included as part of the National Center for Prenatal and Postnatal Down Syndrome Resources.

Together, these three resources provide the most credible, comprehensive support available for new and expectant parents learning about a diagnosis of Down syndrome. In an effort to create a single gateway to all of these resources, The National Center for Prenatal and Postnatal Down Syndrome Resources at www.DownSyndromeDiagnosis.org will serve as a clearinghouse directory of these prenatal and postnatal materials as described in the Prenatally and Postnatally Diagnosed Conditions Awareness Act, P. L. No. 110-374.

HDI Executive Director Harold Kleinert says, "This is an incredibly exciting development for new and expectant parents and medical professionals who are learning about a prenatal or postnatal diagnosis of Down syndrome. All of these resources represent our best available knowledge and have been included as recommended resources in the National Society of Genetic Counselor Practice Guidelines for Communicating a Prenatal or Postnatal Diagnosis of Down Syndrome, and they have been featured in prestigious peer-reviewed journals such as the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Journal of Medical Genetics, and Genetics in Medicine."

Stephanie Meredith, Medical Outreach Director at HDI and author of "Understanding a Down Syndrome Diagnosis," says, "Bringing these three resources together under one umbrella at the National Center for Prenatal and Postnatal Down Syndrome Resources means that it will be even easier for new and expectant parents and medical professionals to find the resources they need during what can be a very overwhelming time. However, we want to do even more than provide these important tools. We want to expand the National Center to make presentations at conferences, provide translated versions of the resources, and develop new materials also."

This vital National Center will continue to strengthen its resources and outreach and will rely on your continued support in spreading the word to medical practitioners and prospective and new parents about the availability of this resource.

Syria launches air strikes as combat rages in Damascus

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian war planes attacked towns in the country's north and east and killed at least five civilians in a strike on an olive oil press as fighting raged in the capital Damascus on Tuesday, opposition activists said.

The latest fighting follows recent battlefield gains by the rebels in their struggle to topple President Bashar al-Assad, but it is far from clear if a strategic breakthrough is likely.

More than 90 people were killed on Tuesday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based group.

Rebels trying to make inroads into the capital battled government forces in the suburb of Kfar Souseh on the edge of the centre of the capital, activists said.

In Aleppo province in the north, rebels shot down a military helicopter, according to video footage posted on YouTube that showed what appeared to be a missile hitting the aircraft.

Security sources and activists have reported a small but growing number of heat-seeking anti-aircraft missiles entering Syria, weapons the rebels would need to stand any chance of overcoming Assad's increasing reliance on air power.

The video could be one of the first clear indications that such weapons are in use. The Local Coordinating Committee opposition group said the Free Syrian Army had downed the helicopter near the Sheikh Suleiman army base, 30 km (20 miles) northwest of the contested city of Aleppo.

More than 40,000 people have been killed in the uprising, activists said. What began as a series of peaceful protests against four decades of Assad family rule in March last year grew into a bitter civil war with sectarian overtones.

U.N. Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Robert Serry, told the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday that around 450,000 are now believed to have fled Syria, with even more displaced inside the country.

"Destruction, death and suffering have become part of daily life across Syria," Serry said. "The humanitarian crisis is becoming more acute with the winter upon us and the number of those in need growing, potentially reaching 4 million inside Syria by the end of 2012."

International Syria mediator Lakhdar Brahimi is due to brief the 15-member council on Thursday and the U.N. General Assembly on Friday. There is diplomatic deadlock between Western powers, who broadly support the opposition and Assad's supporters Russia and China which have blocked Security Council action.

CAR BLASTS AND BARREL BOMBS

Syrian state television said that two people were killed and four wounded in a "terrorist suicide car bomb" in Artouz, near Damascus. The Observatory said the explosion was caused by a car bomb next to a military police checkpoint.

Near the Old City in Damascus, a car bomb killed one person and blew the legs off another man, according to opposition activist Samir al-Shami. He said it was unclear if the car, a white Toyota, was rigged by Assad loyalists or rebels.

In northern Idlib province, a government jet dropped barrel bombs - cylinders packed with explosives and petrol - at the Abu Hilal olive oil press, 2 km (1.2 miles) west of Idlib city, activist Tareq Abdelhaq said.

At least five people were killed and five wounded in the attack, according to the Observatory. Abdelhaq placed the number much higher, citing locals saying that at least 20 were killed and 50 wounded.

Activists said the victims were civilians waiting to press their olives for oil, but they said opposition fighters were in the area. It was unclear if there were any rebel targets nearby.

Combat also took place in the Baba Amr district of Homs city, an area that was overrun by government troops in February, as well as in Aleppo, Deir al-Zor, Deraa, Idlib province and Hama province, the Observatory said.

AIR STRIKES

Rebels have captured at least five army and air force installations in the past 10 days, putting pressure on Assad's forces in Aleppo and Idlib and the eastern oil region of Deir al-Zor.

The opposition are calling for international military aid, particularly against air attacks, but Western powers who support the uprising are wary of radical Islamist units among the rebels. However, some anti-aircraft equipment has been seized from captured army bases.

The government also launched air strikes on Deir al-Zor city and on the strategic town of Maraat al-Numan in Idlib province on Tuesday.

The rebel takeover of Maarat al-Numan last month effectively cut the main north-south highway, a route for Assad to move troops from the Damascus to Aleppo, Syria's largest city where rebels have taken a foothold.

Most foreign powers have condemned Assad, and Britain, France and Gulf countries have recognized an umbrella opposition group, the Syrian National Coalition, as the sole representative of the Syrian people.

But Assad has been able to rely on his allies, especially regional powerhouse Iran, which is believed to be bankrolling him and supplying military support despite U.S. and European sanctions. Russia, its main arms supplier, says it has only sent weapons already agreed to in previous deals.

Nonprofit news website ProPublica reported on Monday that Russia sent 240 metric tons of bank notes to Damascus this summer. U.S. and European sanctions include a ban on minting Syrian banknotes.

Microsoft: Windows 8 selling well despite PC slump

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Microsoft says the latest version of its Windows operating system is off to a great start. Yet it remains unclear whether the revamped software will win over enough people to revive the slumping personal computer market.

About 40 million licenses to Windows 8 were sold in its first month on the market. Microsoft released the figure Wednesday in conjunction with the company's annual shareholder meeting held near its Redmond, Wash. headquarters.

But a prominent analyst who tracks Microsoft for Nomura Securities lowered his financial forecast for the company because he expects PC sales to continue faltering.

Although most of the world's PCs run on Windows, personal computers have been losing market share as more people embrace smartphones and tablet computers to consume and create digital content.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A Florida man on Tuesday sued a former Elmo puppeteer who resigned amid sex abuse allegations, saying the voice actor met him in New York a dozen years ago after trolling gay telephone chat lines seeking underage boys for sex.

The lawsuit, seeking unspecified damages, was filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan by a man who remains anonymous, making him the third person to make claims against Kevin Clash, who resigned from "Sesame Street" last week after 28 years.

Clash had quickly denied the first claim, which was recanted the next day. But Clash then resigned after a 24-year-old college student, Cecil Singleton, sued him for $5 million, saying the actor engaged in sexual behavior with him when he was 15.

According to the latest lawsuit, a 29-year-old man said he met Clash on a chat line when he was 16 and was exploring modeling opportunities in New York. It said the youth, then in high school, specifically stated on the chat line that his intentions were non-sexual. Still, the lawsuit said, Clash pursued, posing as a 30-year-old man whose name was Craig even though he was a decade older.

After speaking by phone for several days, Clash invited the youth to visit his Manhattan apartment, the lawsuit said.

At the apartment, Clash gave the teenager alcohol, and they engaged in sexual contact, including oral sex, the lawsuit said. While in the apartment, the youth spotted numerous Elmo dolls and photographs of Elmo with famous people such as Beyonce and Tyra Banks but didn't learn Clash's history until he moved to New York after high school at age 18 and engaged in a sexual relationship with him, the lawsuit said.

The youth was a compliant victim and did not become aware he had suffered adverse psychological and emotional effects from the sexual acts until this year, the lawsuit said.

Clash's lawyer, Michael Berger, said in a statement that the federal cases filed against Clash are without merit.

"The cases and Mr. Clash's reputation will be defended vigorously," he said.

Marilyn Trenholme Counsell receives the Officer of the Order of Canada designation by Governor General David Johnston during a ceremony in Ottawa this past Friday. Trenholme Counsell was also the recipient of a Diamond Jubilee...

Retired Senator Marilyn Trenholme Counsell has been honoured once again for her outstanding contributions to public life in New Brunswick and in Canada.

Trenholme Counsell was among the 44 Order of Canada honourees recognized in a ceremony at Rideau Hall on Friday. The lifelong politician and literacy advocate from Sackville was named as an Officer of the Order of Canada, recognizing a lifetime of achievement.

Trenholme Counsell said she was honoured to be invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada, a title she will cherish.

?I was so humbled when I found out about it in June,? she said earlier this week of the award.

From her early beginnings in medicine, to her distinguished career as a provincial politician, lieutenant governor and senator, Trenholme Counsell has continuously advocated for early childhood development and literacy.

She was instrumental in helping to establish Born to Read, an initiative of the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire (IODE) that provides gifts of books to new parents. She has also provided leadership to several organizations, including the Vanier Institute of the Family.

Over the years, Trenholme Counsell has been the recipient of honorary degrees from all three New Brunswick universities, a UN Year of the Family award, The Dr. William F. Roberts Political Action Award and many other accolades.

Trenholme Counsell said she was influenced from an early age to become involved at the local and provincial levels by her parents, who were ?very community-minded and active.? She also credits her longtime friend and mentor Romeo Leblanc, former Governor General of Canada, for instilling in her values she has always aspired to keep.

Others receiving Order of Canada honours on Friday were tennis star Daniel Nestor and longtime NHL coach and general manager Pat Quinn, among others.

The Order of Canada was created in 1967, during Canada's centennial year, to recognize a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.

How to manage stress at work - Healthy & Fit Magazine | Mid ...

Two out of five Americans feel stressed at work, according to a survey by the American Psychological Association. Even if you leave your paperwork at the office the stress is likely to follow you home. Stress at work can have a significant impact on your physical and mental health. It?s not good for the business either. Lost productivity, insurance claims, health costs, accidents and replacing lost workers cost industry in the U.S. billions each year. Work related stress is inevitable but you can manage it better with these suggestions.

Takin? Care of Business

Your business that is. You are your best?asset. While you may not be able to control the chaos at work you can control what you put in your mouth and how you take care of your body and that will yield ?healthy dividends to offset the side effects of stress. Keeping yourself fueled with nutritious foods will provide staying power and keep you energized for the workday. Choosing vending machine options or break room pastries may seem like a great boost at first but the quick sugar buzz will leave you foraging for more. The key is planning ahead says Kelsey Stricklen,a Registered?Dietitian?at Cherry Street Health Services in Grand Rapids. ?When we don?t plan ahead we tend to gravitate towards unhealthy choices. Not planning ahead can even increase your stress level and cost you more time and money,? says Stricklen. ?Buy healthy snacks like fruit, veggies, nuts, baked chips, fiber and granola bars then portion them out into small baggies based on a single serving size. Each day on your way out the door you can just grab your pre-portioned snack.?

If you?re going to be stuck at work, plan for beverages too. Use your own BPA-free water bottle. If plain water doesn?t wet your whistle ? liven it up. Stricklen suggest adding cucumbers, lemon or lime for flavor. Stash your desk or locker with herbal or green tea bags and low-fat hot chocolate. Coffee still reigns for the 3 o?clock fix, especially now with recent studies saying coffee could reduce the risk Parkinson?s disease, type 2 Diabetes, prostate cancer, and liver cancer to name a few. Just avoid adding too much sugar and flavored creamers.

Whistle While You Work

?Paying attention to when your body signals you are tense is important so you can learn to take the time to release tension,? says Maribeth Janer,LMSW, clinical social worker and therapist of Northville. ?Turning on some quiet back-ground music, even for a short time, especially while closing our eyes and letting your mind wander a bit can help.? Sometimes it?s just good to get off your chair and move. ?Stand and stretch for a few moments every hour, as well as taking a few minutes to breathe in and out slowing while looking out a window or a different view,? suggests Janer. Christine Anthony of Beulah does just that and more.?I don?t stock pile stuff on my desk to put away at the end of the day, I get up and put it away when I?m done with it and I use the restroom farthest away.? Stepping away from your work, even for a few minutes will likely give you a fresh perspective and make you more productive. Need help reminding yourself to actually do this? Set your cell phone alarm every hour or two and get moving!

Internal Affairs

Juggling work and family is tough enough for anyone. Add a heavier workload and stress compounds.?The key here is to set goals that need to be done in a given day, and then let go of the rest as much as possible,? suggests Janer. Can you divide and conquer and work with another colleague? Or is this a continuous issue that you need to discuss with your supervisor??Janer recommends confronting the situation head on. ?Often assumptions are made regarding what others are doing or wanting that can be inaccurate, so by trying to discuss your thoughts about the problem, it may be possible to relieve a great deal of stress, says Janer.??Christina Rogers, a former resident of Lake Ann now living in California, approached her boss when other workers weren?t carrying their fair share of the load. ?I spoke with my boss and and he observed us over cameras and took care of the situation.? Not every issue will be resolved in your favor but honest communication with co-workers and supervisors is essential to?negotiate a better working environment which could mean less stress for everyone.

Style Site Polyvore Debuts Its First Ever iPhone App, Touts Cash Flow Positive Operations

0 followingPolyvore, the interactive fashion and style website that lets people create collages of apparel and accessories using images from any online store, has had solid growth since it first came on the scene back in 2007. Its monthly unique visitor count has steadily grown to more than 19 million, and, co-founders Jess Lee and Pasha Sadri tell me, the 55-person company's operations recently went beyond being merely profitable to achieve cash flow positive status. What's kind of surprising is that Polyvore has achieved this kind of scale all without having any native mobile apps. The company has seen a decent amount of traffic from its HTML5-powered mobile website, but having a native app for the iPhone especially has been an oft-requested feature from users for some time now.

Tips on how to Keep A Long-Distance Relationship at College (or ...

Not really long distance, but distance in time

When you enter college, many of you are leaving behind your best friends, family and your relationships. Despite the heartache you know that comes with long distance relationships, you still want to try it out with your boyfriend/girlfriend.

Honestly, long-distance relationships suck. I should know. My boyfriend and I have maintained a long-distance relationship for three years. We attend different colleges in different states. I even studied abroad in London for a semester. I have seen many of my friends? long distance relationships struggle, fail, and succeed.

Long-distance relationships are hard, but it can be very rewarding for the relationship and for your self if you can endure the distance. Here are some tips that have worked for me:

Schedule Skype Dates

?

Skype is your best friend. If you and your partner don?t have it, download it now for free on their website. Skype is an easy way to have video chats via the Internet. This will be the best way to effectively speak with your loved one when you guys can?t see each other.

I usually plan to speak to my boyfriend 2-4 nights per week for about 30 minutes depending on our schedules. Make sure to discus with your partner ahead of time when you want to talk.

Don?t forget headphones. You don?t want your roommate to hear all the embarrassing pet names your ?boo? calls you.?

Text often

Texting is a great way to tell each other about the little things going on in your daily lives. Nothing like a cute text from your partner to brighten up your day. Be careful not to text ALL the time. It can turn your partner off and you can be missing out on opportunities to meet new friends at college.

Care packages

Care packages are the best. Surprise care packages are even better. Get a box and fill it with your partner?s favorite candies, homemade cookies, stuffed animals, CD?s, DVD?s, inside jokes, etc. Sending a care package tells your partner that you are thinking about them even though your miles away.

Plan visits

My boyfriend visited me while I was in studying in London.

It is really important that you and your partner plan to see each other eventually. Physically being together builds reassurance in the relationships. Plus, it?s just nice to hold hands.

It is also good to learn how to use public transportation and develop a sense of street smarts. And always tell somebody where you are going just in case.

Megabus and Boltbus are the best ways to travel between cities and college campuses for as cheap as $1! The earlier you get your tickets the cheaper the price. As seats fill up the price for tickets get more expensive. So plan ahead.

Give space

One of the great things about long-distance relationships is the space it allows you to grow as a young adult. Long-distance relationships take a lot of patience and maturity

With today?s technologies like Skype, cell phones, and Facebook, it has become easier more than ever to communicate with loved ones far away. Although you have the ability to communicate every second with your partner, just don?t do it. Give each other space to meet new friends and experience new things. College is a great time to realize your passions and career paths.

Don?t forget to be flexible. If he/she doesn?t answer your text within an hour, don?t expect that he/she is cheating. Trust your partner to be true. In most cases, they were probably were stuck in class or they forgot to charge their phone last night from staying up all night talking to you.

Remember the Time Traveler?s Wife could do it ?so can you!

Android 4.2.1 hits AOSP, for you build-from-source types

Android 4.2.1

If you like to roll your own built-from-source Android ROM -- or if you rely on a developer to roll one for you -- rest easy knowing that Android 4.2.1 (Build JOP40D) has dropped into the Android Open Source Project. That means the code is there, and proper building can commence. No huge changes here (the missing December thing is the most notable at this point), but having the code is better than not, and Google's pushed it out just hours after devices started getting the update.

Google's Jean-Baptiste Queru also mentions that factory images should be pushed "in the next few days," so you can get your reset on without worry.

It should be recognised that in the past there has been much more of a

Cybercrime is now upon us and it needs to be controlled and reduced.
The investigator needs to adopt technology & apply it to the investigative
problems to assist in limiting the opportunities for those who commit
offences.

The investigator still needs to be able to respond to offences committed in a

Malbec, Meat and More ? Food Pairing with Argentina's Flagship Wine

?

?

The appetite-whetting sight and scent of an alfresco Argentine asado is enough to bring out the inner caveman in even the most sophisticated of metropolitan food lover. And nowhere is this more apparent than after a hard day?s wine tasting, out among the vines of Mendoza, as the first sizzle of meat hitting the grill sends a plume of smoky welcome into the crisp Andean air. It?s the prelude to the near perfect Malbec moment, when this bold, aromatic and savoury variety comes into its own as a sensational partner to red-blooded meat cooked gaucho-style over a slumbering fire.

Beef from the asado
Beef from an asado in the vineyards; photo by James Kibbey.

Of course, Argentine Malbec and meat ? with emphasis on beefy steaks and grills ? is a story well told. So much so that Malbec?s fondness for a broader swathe of dishes is often overlooked. Meat, admittedly, remains its favourite sparring partner. But with a surprisingly varied flavour spectrum, ranging from juicy, red-fruit leaning wines to intense, tannic, darker specimens, the variety can take all manner of robust flavours and textures in its stride.

At the easier-going end of this spectrum, Argentina?s Malbecs sit comfortably with favourites such as pizza and rich pasta dishes ? including Bolognese, but also with earthier aubergine or mushroom-laden concoctions. It?s also a pretty reliable bet with the comforting simplicity of proper butchers? bangers and mustardy mash or blood-rich black pudding and Puy lentils.

Ramp up the quality a little, and the more savoury, even spicy edge to the variety starts calling for some pretty serious foods. Given the noble origins of Malbec in the vineyards of Bordeaux, this perhaps comes as little surprise. Moreover, it?s something that sommeliers are increasingly open to explore.

?Malbec is like pizza or sex ? even when its not the best it?s still enjoyable,? says Alessandro Marchesan, head sommelier at Zuma and Roka restaurants in London. ?But when Malbec is good, the aromatic, slightly herbal notes in the wine can work very well as a counterpoint to herby or even spicy notes in a dish.?

Marchesan?s most memorable Malbec match came with a salt and mustard-tinged ham hock dish, also taking fruity apple sauce in its stride. He also suggests Malbec as a versatile partner for a number of vibrant Spanish dishes, again including pork-based recipes where the sweet, juicy white meat is met with Mediterranean herbs, along with French charcuterie, where higher altitude wines, with higher acidity, act as a foil to the fatty richness in the food.

For Viraj Sawant, sommelier at La Trompette, it?s the higher altitude, more poised styles that offer the most possibilities with finer food.

?If you are looking at the more elegantly structured, higher acidity Malbecs, then these are good at cutting through rich, fattier foods, such as duck, game birds or even goose,? says Sawant. ?I would even pair some Malbec with a very oily, herby fish dish, such as sardines.?

Luigi Buonanno, wine buyer and head sommelier at the Etrusca Group of restaurants, says it all comes down the style of Malbec. He suggests elegant Patagonian Malbec with herby Proven?al lamb (or a British Sunday roast complete with mint sauce), while favouring the bigger structured, richer wines of Mendoza with game or venison (so long as the game is not too gamey), and says hard cheese is also a good partner.

?Malbec, with its highish alcohol and rich body, is an ideal weight as a wine to round off a meal, and it also works well with hard cheeses such as mature cheddar or pecorino, so this can be another good time to bring it to the table.?

It?s not just British and Mediterranean cuisines, either, that can work with Argentina?s flagship grape variety. At the Cinnamon Club, a fine London eatery dedicated to modern Indian cuisine and good wine, executive chef Vivek Singh, working closely with his sommeliers, is currently recommending Argentine Malbec with his saddle of Cumbrian deer, which comes complete with a pickled spice kedgeree, on the menu.

?We find that Malbec is quite versatile and seems to work well with pickle and spice flavours such as fennel and cumin, along with the sweetness of the meat and smoky flavours from the tandoor,? says Singh. ?It?s a wine that can cope with all these elements in a dish.?

As if all the above was not enough, perhaps a final word should go to another pairing possibility that the richer, softer styles of Malbec can take in their stride. It is, of course, chocolate, a normally tricky customer for wine, but one that (especially when dark and high quality) can work rather well with this very versatile champion of Argentine wine.

Malbec, then, offers so much more versatility than perhaps first meets the eye. And this in addition to being a world-beating partner for all things asado?

Please tell us what other foods and cuisines you like to pair with Malbec in the comments below.
